Yes it is very expensive for such a little thing, but you very much get what you pay for. It comes pre oiled, so the leaves are very smooth to orientate, the three black screws are nice to loosen and tighten the hinge when you need. Its one of those things where i would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Yes, i probably won’t ever need to use the 84 threads or the 4 threads per inch leaves, but I'm grateful i have them, you never know. The ranges of threads you get is really what youre paying for. Its pretty hard to be accurate when machining a tool that can measure and differentiate between 84 and 82 threads per inch. Thats insane. Its really cool that this tool ranges from 4 to 84 threads per inch. Other than that, it is solid, very compact in size, about a half inch thick, and about 2 inches on each side of its triangular shape. Its very easy to read the stamped numbers as well. Very useful for automotive, electronic engineering, literally anything you can think of that involves a bolt with threads you don't know about. You could estimate metric threads too but i believe this is imperial cause its Starret. But i would treat this as a precision tool, each individual leaf’s thickness is about a hair thinner than a credit card, so be gentle. However the leaves and plate are made of heat treated steel so it is quite sturdy, but still.Thank you Starret!

I tried several other screw pitch gages before settling on the Starrett. I found the quality of the other gauges to be lacking. The Starrett screw pitch gage was simply a better made, better performing product.

Despite a review published on July 27, 2012 identifying that the photo and description didn't match the model number, the product being shipped still doesn't match. The #473 (which is clearly indicated) has fewer blades and no locking mechanism, which makes it less desirable and marginally less usable than other higher-end products. It would be nice if the photo and description (including mention of locking capability for blades) was updated so as no to mislead any other customers.

It's a Starrett. It doesn't disappoint :) The design is very intuitive (the way in which the blades are organized and labeled) and the thumb screws make it easy to fix the blade you are using out while keeping the others out of the way.The only thing that surprised me about this instrument is its size -- it's perhaps 2" wide. Somehow, I expected it to be much bigger. This is not a problem, though -- it leaves more space for other tools in my toolbox! :D

A well engineered tool with more TPI choices than you'll likely ever need.A nice touch is that the leaves come with a touch of oil on them to prevent oxidation.The leaves that come on this device cover the following TPI's: 4, 4-1/2, 5, 5-1/2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 11-1/2, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74, 76, 78, 80, 82, 84.
