Bone's hardness and density contributes to good tone, it polishes well, and it allows more precise filing. Bone is traditionally preferred for making nuts and saddles on quality instruments.
Shaped saddles will save you a LOT of work—a head start for the novice, and a timesaver for the busy shop. The sizes have been carefully researched, and accurately radiused, so that minor trimming, slotting, and sanding are usually all you'll need to do.

Fits my Martin acoustic guitar saddle slot in the bridge perfectly. Has smooth contoured top edge for the strings to bend around. It was easy to measure and sand off the bottom edge to obtain the optimal string height and action. It is wide enough to cut away portions on the ends to match the original saddle, which I am keeping original...just in case I ever want to go back. But so far, the guitar plays easier, and without strings buzzing.

I have very little guitar repair experience. I was able to file it down and make it work. Holds up well.
