Efficient Filtration for a Healthy Pond

The TetraPond ClearChoice BioFilter works to keep your pond clean through biological and mechanical filtration. This easy-to-use system filters coarse debris and provides biological filtration media with massive surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize and remove harmful pollutants. The ClearChoice BioFilter utilizes a unique Venturi system, which draws air into the in-flowing water, creating ideal conditions for the beneficial bacteria to decompose waste. Take a look at the information below to see how the ClearChoice BioFilter could benefit your pond.

How it Works

Stage 1: Pond water is pumped into the filter. It passes through the foam, which sieves coarse suspended debris from the water (Mechanical Filtration).

Stage 2: The water from stage 1 then passes through the finer foam, which provides further filtration.

Stage 3: The final purification process of the water occurs on the surface of the biological filtration media. Beneficial bacteria will naturally colonize on this massive surface area and convert the harmful pollutants in the water into relatively harmless nitrates, which are absorbed by the aquatic plants or removed in partial water changes.

The Tetra Venturi and Trickle-Flow System

The water inlet into your filter is fitted with an advanced Venturi system, which draws air into the in-flowing water, creating ideal conditions for the beneficial bacteria to decompose waste. This, when combined with the use of “Trickle Filtration” encourages the prolific growth of beneficial bacteria, which helps to keep the pond free of pollutants.

Recommended Pump

TetraPond recommends the TetraPond Water Garden Pump 325 GPH or 550 GPH. Do not use pumps with flows that exceed 550 gallons per hour unless a flow control valve is used.

The product is great and I didn't know until after buying it if you use a bard tee adapter you can buy two of them and link them together to create a larger filter. It comes with attachment to add a smaller water feature such as a fountain so that's great. I though the bio balls it came with were oversized for the filter but for the price it's not a bad filter for smaller sized pond and it's pretty easy to put together with out doing much work. Wish I would of had one of these years ago.

I have a backyard pond, 600 gallons or so. I use this in line with a UV light and my pond water is crystal clear. This thing works great and is very simple. You do need to purchase a pump and some hose to get the water from the pond through this and then back into your pond. All you have to do after is clean the sponge like filter once a week or two. You could probably get creative and put the filter further away and out of sight but I just simply put a nice plant on top of it.

Within a month a pinhole opened in the center of the lid. I was able to stop that tiny leak with flex tape. You have to make sure you get the lid on straight and tight or it will leak as well, bit that makes sense. I've had it about a year now and it was doing great. Never had to worry about the waterfall stopping and the water stayed pretty clear with normal maintenance. I wake up the other day and I only had about 4 inches of water in my pond, on the hottest day of the year no less! Turns out, the seam on the bottom of this sprung a leak! In one night it almost drained my pond!!!! Beware, the pressure this thing goes through can cause the plastic to leak at it's weak points. And my pump is only for 500 gallons!

I have a 7,000 gal pond and every summer it turns green with excessive algae growth. I have tried multiple methods and nothing worked...very frustrating. Then I got this filter and was amazed. The pond was like green pea-soup when I installed this system. Within 24 hrs I noticed a big difference and after 3-4 days the pond was crystal clear !!!! I had the in-pond one before and got tired of having to lift it out of the pond to clean it. In any case it never really worked. This unit is out-of-the-pond and very easy to clean. The most important thing is to use the recommended pump size, which is 550 gph. This is essential as a bigger pump would cause it to overflow leak and the faster flow rate would not allow enough contact time through the UV filter and the bio-filter, which is necessary for it to function efficiently. Also, please note that I have a UV clarifier in line between the pump and the bio-filter. Do not place the UV clarifier after the bio-filter....it will not work like that.I have had my pond for over 6 yrs and this is the first Summer that I have a crystal clear pond. As I mentioned, I live in South Florida where the heat and excessive sun exposure is brutal on a pond and the algae thrive in those situations.

This filter works great as long as you install it correctly and use the recommended stainless steel hose clamps at the joints. Also be sure to not over power it with your pump. I use the Tetra 350gph and it works great! Also be sure to use the 1-1/4 inch pipe for the outlet while 1 inch for the inlet. On restart, you will notice the filter back up a little. This is caused by dips in your outflow line. Once the siphon gets going, the filter will empty out again and stay that way. For my setup the system balances out in about a minute.Water quality is fantastic. It cleared out my pond overnight. Much better than the in water filter I had before.

I've read several reviews where people complain about it leaking. I think it's because the unit isn't located high enough above the water line. I've purchased 2 of these in the last 4 years (2 different houses - not because 1 broke) and it took me awhile to figure this out. If water is spewing out of the venturi, it's because there isn't enough downward pressure to move the water out of the unit fast enough, so it backs up and comes out that spout. Same goes for if the lid is leaking. It's because too much water is building up inside the unit. So try placing the unit up higher, and make sure your pump doesn't exceed 550 gallons per hour. This filter keeps the water clear. The replacement pads are reasonably priced and last a good amount of time. The only thing I don't like is that the replacement pads come as a set - 1 blue and 1 gray. The blue pad is plastic-y and lasts forever. The finer gray one, however, wears out quickly and turns to mush. But you have to buy both just to get the one you really need. But no biggie, it's still a very good filter.
