Hail protection principles based on impact dynamics (from the patent file)
The energy absorbed by the protective material layer must be equal to the kinetic energy of a hailstone
- A hailstone (5) is modeled as a spherical object with an impact speed Vo and mass m. As shown in the figure, the indentation /impact force P of a spherical indenter (hail radius R) is a function of the indentation depth δ and the contact stiffness C based on Hertz’s contact law. The contact stiffness C is an increasing function of the Young’s modulus (a material constant to evaluate whether the material is hard or soft) of the protective material layer (31).
- The protection mechanism is based on the energy balance, i.e., the energy absorbed by the protective material layer (31) must be equal to the kinetic energy of a hailstone when the maximum indentation depth δmax is achieved. As long as the thickness of the specific protective material (Tpm) is greater than δmax, no kinetic energy can be transferred to the car structures (41). Therefore, a thick protective panel is needed for a large hailstone. However, most hail protection products do not state the hailstone sizes for protection.
- For some cheap products designed and made in China, the protective material layer is too thin, and the protective material is very soft. According to the energy principle, a very soft material requires a large layer thickness to absorb the kinetic energy from the hailstone. Only the hail shield is a perfect design to satisfy (1) the energy principle, and (2) balanced protective material volume, weight, and cost. Please DO NOT complain about the weight of the hail shield---because we have to stop the damage from LARGE hailstones at a reasonable price!

This is more than just a car cover, it is a hail protection system. The hail shield is thick and appears very durable, able to withstand significant impacts. Once you have read the included directions and figured out how the straps and everything else works it is pretty straightforward to install. It could be installed by one person but having an extra pair of hands is definitely preferred. Fortunately, there have been no hail storms in my area recently so it hasn't been put to the real test yet but I see no reason why it would fail. When installed correctly it should protect or minimize damage to the major areas (hood, windshield, roof, trunk) of your vehicle.

I purchased this hail shield for my dad as we live in an area that hails a lot. He closely examined the hail cover and instructions. He was very impressed with the hail shield construction and felt confident it could protect against golf or ping pong ball sized hail. Reviewing the excellent instructions and illustrations, he estimated with two people it would take 5-10 minutes on initial install. If both individuals have instructions in mind after a couple of installs you could get the install time down to 3 minutes. He was really impressed with this product and confident it will do the job.

I was looking for a cover to protect my car in TX and the inflatable ones looked like a gimmick. This one is made in TX, is very solid, hard shell type of cover, but still very compact, easy to deploy and very affordable. I keep it in my trunk now for road trips.

This is the sort of product you don't think about needing until its too late and your car is left with thousands in damage (don't ask me how I know wahhhh). Setting this up was a bit of a learning curve so I definitely recommend testing it out once or twice before you're truly in a crunch with a storm bearing down. However once in place it seems to be sturdy and very heavy duty. Though it still takes me longer than 3 minutes to set up, I can do it in about 5! And the peace of mind is wonderful.

I guess "practice" is the key word with setting up this item. But once you you know what to do, it can happens pretty quick. Fortunately, I have not had the necessity to try this item out. But from an observational standpoint, it looks like it would absorb the impact from hail as described (golf ball sized). It has two layers: the first covers the top; the second goes over the first and extends down the sides. The pieces are marked directly on the product for easy reference. You will likely notice a somewhat foul odor upon opening the box. It smells awfully close cigarette smoke. The manufacturer seems aware of this as they included a laminated paper in the box stating the odor is temporary and a result of the chemicals used to manufacture.

Make sure you put it on twice as practice. If you want to get it down to 3 minutes you have to know how to throw and secure it quickly. Cover Subaru Outback totally!!! Two Pieces. Protects all windows.

It only takes 3 minutes to set up everything. The material is thick and feels really strong. I am confident now it will protect my car very well even with tennis ball size hail. Amazing product!
