i got for some extra room in car, worked well i know it is a soft roof carrier was a little nerve racking putting onto car but i did stay on it for a 300-mile trip. I was concerned if i had tied it to rails good forcing me to stop 2 times to check after we heard a "noise" but straps and bag were tight and didn't move. definitely does not look aerodynamic when packed though like the picture you see on box more like a squashed muffin ,i will recommend the Thule rooftop carrier though seems very sturdy and weather resistant next time we go to use it maybe get it better shaped for aerodynamics! definitely had enough room inside for additional items just didn't use that extra for the first time till was comfortable after first trip using.

Ok everyone. I read the other reviews and was honestly concerned about purchasing this product given some of the experiences described. This is my second Thule product, so I thought I would give the Thule Interstate bag a try. I have used this bag twice since purchase on a trip from Charlotte to New York and Jacksonville to Philadelphia, encountering rain on both trips. There was no leakage from the bag, no damage from wind, tears or fraying. Honestly, it still looks brand new today. Strapping the carrier to the roof rails correctly is important, taping or knotting extra nylon strap belt material,so it does not blow in the wind is helpful, (dependent on your car this could be 4 inches to 6 inches of material. If you are concerned about the bag moving or flying off, there are additional hooks that will work with other straps or bungee cords. Do not overfill the bag. My only desire would be for the bag to be larger, but since it fits between the rails on the roof rack, the space is limited. I used the Interstate on a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it just fit between the roof rack rails when they were separated at the full distance. This is not a hard sided case that bolts to a roof rack and offers more space, and security. But it is easier to place on a car and much easier to store as it rolls up and can be put back in the original box.

I have a Yakima system (round crossbars) attached to the standard side rails on our 2015 Toyota RAV4. This bag claims to be compatible with side rails alone. However I can’t begin to see how that’s possible. There are two attachment straps on the front and rear of the bag which can only be used if you have cross bars available. These attachment straps are located low towards the base of the bag and so there don’t “hold the bag down” on to the roof of the vehicle. They just secure the bag side to side / front to rear. I used additional ratchet straps over the top of the bag to secure it onto the roof.Since this is a soft sided bag, the force of wind at highway speeds deforms the bag. But the bag along with the extra straps traveled well in our 700 mile trip to SC.I read some reviews that this bag is not truly waterproof. That is true! It’s, I guess, water resistant. I took the advice of another reviewer and put all of our bags into plastic garbage bags before loading the roof carrier and I’m glad that I did. We drove through occasional light rain... nothing horrible... and there was moisture inside the carrier when I unloaded it at our destination. I can’t imagine how much water might have gotten in had we driven through driving rain. The bag itself is made of very heavy materials and the zipper and cover flap seem very well made. I would have given it 5 stars if the attachment straps were located in a way to more securely attach the bag... also it’s just crazy that there isn’t any provision for attachments to side rails. I’ll ignore how “waterproof” the bag is / is not. It’s cheap and easy insurance to cover luggage in plastic bags. All in all, it’s a “pretty good” rooftop carrier. It’s materials are heavy duty. But the attachment system could use some design updates to allow a more secure attachment. Also they should add attachment points on the sides. As for waterproof, pack your luggage in plastic bags!UPDATE: I need to correct my comments above regarding side attachment points. Upon closer inspection, Thule does provide attachment rings on the sides of the bags. The rings are integral to side straps which hold the cover to the bag. I guess they expect that you will move the straps from the front / rear to the side rings. Given this discovery, I’d only ask then that they’d add 4 more straps so that you could secure the bag on both sides in addition to front / rear.

Reading negative reviews about product falling apart after minimal use definitely made me a bit hesitant to spend the money on this product, but I decided to trust the Thule name and spend the money and I'm glad I did. This is a great cargo bag! I recently purchased a new suv, Hyundai Tucson, which is quite a bit smaller than my previous suv. For a family beach trip, I knew there would not be enough cargo space for the family and all of our stuff, so figured a cargo bag would be necessary for the trip. I loved the built in straps that made it super easy to attach to my cross rails. I do not have side rails to attach any straps to but this bag easily attached to my cross rails and stayed in place for the duration of my ride (I debated using a ratchet strap across the bag and looping through rear windows but didn't and it definitely wasn't necessary). This bag was pretty aerodynamic as I didn't notice any difference in the ride when it was on the car. Not a huge bag, but perfect for a crossover or small suv. I had no problems with durability of the bag as I just got home and it's still in perfect condition (about 100 miles each way of the trip driving through a combination of neighborhood driving with stop and go traffic and highways, at times going 80 mph). There are definitely cheaper products on the market, but if you want a quality made product with built in straps that is extremely easy to attach to roof cross rails, I highly recommend this product.

One round trip from Northern California to Southern California and it's already falling apart. Coming apart by zipper on the rear of the bag. Found little tiny pieces all over inside of bag. Was warm in L.A. but not "hot" by any means. Bag was anchored correctly and securely. Was not over filled. Would have given it zero stars if possible.
