I bought 2 of these and a Jayco and a different one to compare to my Snap-on depth gauge. I bought 2 because they were cheap and if I lost or broke one (or both) it wouldn't be as big of a deal as the Jayco or Snap-on.Of the 2 of the orange ones I purchased one was nice and smooth as I hoped. The other feels really "gritty" and not as smooth. But they are still as accurate as the other 3 I have.

The gauge is well built but I have to apply a certain finger pressure to get consistent readings. If I use normal pressure I get 8/32 where I know the depth is 9/32. (My tires are new). Depending where I check, I get readings different readings from 9/32. The only consistent readings I get (9/32) is when I use the manual sliding rod gauge. I just push the rod down & all readings are consistent 9/32.

I'm no stranger to dial indicators and calipers but most of that is overkill for a tire. Thata where this little unit comes into play. Press the probe out. Press it against the tire. Remove and read the treat depth. Make it quick and painless to run check for any abnormal wear before it's an issue. The resistance on the probe is great to get a good measurement without trying to find the perfect angle if you happen to have the wheels on a car when checking. Dial is easy to read and the needle travels smoothly.

Its a nice heavy, solid build, but obviously the designers have never truly measured tires before.Cons:1. The pin is offset to one side, making the landing area small on that side, so if you have a wide groove, the pin wont hit the center of the groove, causing shallower measurements. Not a great design.2. The depth on this gauge is only 13/32, a lot of tires, LT, AT, large p or hard metrics will not be able to be measured when new, until you get suns wear on them.3. The push pin on top to set the pin depth is nice an smooth, but at some point in its stroke, it gets gritty and feels like its skipping4. Orange color is hideous.5. Wish it had units in mm as wellPros:1. Heavy solid metal case.2. Easy to read3. Soft bag/case included4. Compact5. Manual, not battery/digital6. Mostly smooth operation

My stare inspect requires specific tread depth and they're really bad about failing you just to try to sell you new tires. I used this before going in to check my own tires and then made sure to tell them that I'd already checked the tires with my own gauge. The only time they haven't tried to sell me tires in years.

To use this gauge, you simply place the bottom of it against your tire's tread and push down the silver plunger. The bottom of the gauge has a flat section that you need to get seated properly against the tread of the tire. I wish the plunger had a more secure way to hold the setting. It works simply by staying at the position in which you push it down. So it can get bumped or jarred out of place. That said, it gives you a much more objective measurement of the tire tread and that's very helpful for determining the life left on your tires.
