Bought to back up the NVR for my cameras - small, unobtrusive, enough capacity for intended use. Good brand, price was right. What's not to like?

Already had to go through a black out this morning. The battery backup did it's job just as described. Couldn't be happier!

First, for reference I am an electrical engineer so take that into account. We live in a very rural location with relatively frequent power disruptions, most of subsecond duration. We had multiple instances where the UPS did not activate but the TV powered itself off from the power glitch. More recently, we would have very short duration glitches that caused the UPS to completely power down, requiring us to manually restart it - and of course all the attached equipment. In short the UPS not only did not protect us from power events it made them worse since the satellite box & Starlink router took a significant time to restart after we turned the UPS back on. Consigned the UPS to the trash heap after only about 2 years.Tripp Lite tech support was less than useless, not listening to my problem description and going to a "have you checked this" script.I should note that previous experience with Tripp Lite products while in the computer maintenance business was not good, reviews led me to believe they had improved. My experience suggests this is not the case.

I have seen some bad reviews on here and all I can tell you is I have been running two computers off this one unit for over 1 year and no problems. It was running one computer for a few years before that and I have only had to replace the battery once.

For the first few weeks it had a chemical smell that would make you sick. Eventually that went away. It operated fine during the few power outages I had. With only my router plugged in, it lasted for 2 hours during an outage. It is now 2.5 years after I bought this unit (700va version) and the battery no longer holds a charge. Given it was only discharged fewer than 10 times, I would have expected another year at least, out of the battery. It has always concerned me that it runs very warm to the touch whether on line power or battery. I wouldn't call it hot, but very warm. I've never had a ups that was always warm, so it makes me uncomfortable, like it's one step away from overheating. Due to the heat issue, I think I'll replace the unit with another brand instead of investing in a new battery.

When Hurricane sandy hit, my company's office in Nag's head was flooded.Everyone followed our instructions to put all elecronics up on their desks and have none of them on the floor... but not everyone unplugged them. When the building flooded, every computer behind a Tripp-lite UPS Surge supressor was undamaged. The devices completely died, some with major electrical damage, but they did so in a manner where that surge was not passed on to the devices. I've heard time and time again how they honor their lifetime warranty, replacing any failed device you send them pictures of... but honestly, if it dies protecting my stuff, I feel they deserve more business and I'll happily buy replacements.I have never lost any electronics behind a Tripp-lite. So when it came time to get some UPS units for my personal computers at home, I picked up these. I was very thrilled to see that without even loading software, I could plug in my desktops to the UPS with USB and it immediately told me the state of the battery as though I had a laptop. I could even set windows power management to do shut downs depending on battery percentage (just like a laptop). Again, this is all without power management software. The price is excellent for what you pay for and I sleep better during storms knowing my equipment is protected.

Tripp is a very good company. I use a little of their surge protectors. Decided to try a UPS to replace one that failed. 3 yr warranty.Did a little testing. I suspect these are representative of other brands as well. Fully charged, it provided 52 watt hours of energy after I unplugged it (simulating a power outage). So if your PC uses 26 watts, it should run a couple of hours before the UPS dies. It also burns about 15 watts of power on its own when it is fully charged and waiting for a power outage. Like leaving a medium sized LED ceiling light on 24/7. So that’s the price we pay for having backup protection.

Upon unboxing the AVR550U, there was a strong odour from the UPS. At first, I thought it was a plastic "new product" smell but it was something else. I left it running for a couple of days but the smell became a bit overwhelming and feared it was toxic, as I became nauseated to be in the same room as the device. I reached out to Tripp Lite support, who indicated they didn't have any reports of odours from the model I purchased, but they did have an issue with a different model and may have been a result of a varnish they use on the internals after the inspection & cleaning process. Tripp Lite support suggested putting it in my garage for a couple of days and the smell should dissipate, so I followed their suggestion. If their products are known to have toxic fumes, why wouldn't they air them out at the factory? There was nothing in the instructions saying we should be airing them out. After reconnecting it in my house, the same issue was occurring. Instead of doing an exchange with Amazon, I decided to do an RMA exchange; this way, Tripp Lite could inspect the product if there was some sort of manufacturing issue. The RMA arrived quickly, still has the same odour as the previous unit, but way less strong. I'm still wondering if this is going to cause any long term health effects. I noticed the 1st unit was made in China and the RMA was made in Vietnam. When trying to return the old product, that's when the multi week nightmare started. The Support team only initiates the RMA but doesn't support/deal with it beyond that; follow up has to be done with the Order Administration (OA) team. The OA team only respond to emails once a week, even though their automated reply says they will respond within a few hours. Phone calls to the Order Administration team ended up with me being directed to employees' voicemails, never to be returned. Tripp Lite does not appear to be set up to handle Canadian customers as it appears only 1 person from Tripp Lite USA deals with shipping/returns from Canada and he was not responsive. I had 30 days to return the product after the RMA process started and it took weeks of emails and follow up phone calls before I got a pre-paid courier pickup scheduled from them but likely only because I added Tripp Lite's Director of Customer Service and a generic email address for Tripp Lite Canada to the email chain. I was one day away from emailing their CEO because I didn't even get an email response from the Customer Service Director. This was the single worst retail experience I've ever had with a company in my life. Lessons learned for next time: 1) Always do exchanges via Amazon 2) Only buy APC brand UPS's going forward. I'm probably going to keep this unit but Tripp Lite has lost a customer for life because if I was to ever have an issue with one of their products and need warranty services, I will never want to deal with their Order Administration team again.

I picked this unit because of its low price and my good experience with Tripp-Lite's UPS products in the past. Also, this unit features automatic voltage regulation (AVR) which is unusual at this price point.I've had it in operation for about two weeks and no problems there. However, the data protection feature - where you can feed thru an RJ-11 telephone or RJ-45 ethernet line for surge protection - seems poorly implemented. When I installed the unit, I connected ethernet cables carrying 100baseT thru the data protection ports. Result: no connection. After trying a couple of different patch cords, I connected an ethernet cable tester to check continuity and found that the IN-OUT ports map 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-5, 5-4 and 6 thru 8 no connection. To give Tripp-Lite some credit, the ad for the unit specifies that it will protect telephone and 10baseT service. 10baseT is defined as using a single twisted pair. Presumably, if that pair were connected via pins 1 thru 3, it would pass data. So T-L's claim that it will protect a 10baseT data connection - narrowly defined - is true. But it's an air gap for fast or gigabyte ethernet. Useless! And who the heck uses 10baseT anymore?I emailed Tripp-Lite tech support about a week ago asking if this odd pinout for the data protection port was intentional or accidental, but I have not heard back.I'll stay with four stars overall because the unit is otherwise working well and the loss of use of the data protection feature, while disappointing, is not a big issue for me.
