First off, it's a chunky boi. It's 8 pounds, 3.6kg....but whatever you hit, you split. The key, I find, is to not expect it to do 100% of the work for you unless the wood is totally knot-free. While it is a chunky boi, if you put a little oomph into the swing, it'll plow through even the gnarliest knotty wood without hesitation. Some sticks, straight-grain, the weight alone is plenty, for the gnarly stuff, give it a bit of motivation coming down and it'll also split with ease. Red oak, white oak....I call it my "honey badger"; it just doesn't care.Edge geometry is good, fine balance between split and stick, and thanks to the weight it doesn't stick very often. It really is a great splitting tool. I know "fiskars" plastic-handle options get all the recommendations, but this is no slouch. Just go into it knowing it's heavy and sometimes you have to swing it like you mean it. For a wood-hafted maul, this is pretty great. It splits the rounds I've challenged it with and hasn't objected at all. Has the edge geometry to get stuck in, and the weight to carry through. Advantage over the revered "fiskars"? If the handle breaks...it's wood, replaceable. No need to replace whole tool; can just re-hang it on a new handle.I'm very pleased. It can be a (light) workout to use, but the reward is easily split wood. I'm very happy with it. Good thing about buying "metal head, wood handle"? Just have to buy a new handle. Never have to pay to replace whole tool. I paid $55 and for what I've gotten, it was a steal .Just don't think it's a quarter-pound lightweight and you'll be fine. It's a MAUL, not an AXE. It uses weight to handle it's business, and it handles it with ease. Swing it like you mean it, and it'll split most woods with boring and surprising ease.
