Kids have dropped them and taken them through mud. They still work well and are holding up. Pleasantly surprised. Would buy again.

- These have a rotating bezel, but the bezel is loose, almost to the point of uselessness.- The construction is a softer plastic. As such, the parts only “mostly” fit/align…and the joints will wear and become loose with just a small amount of use.- These are air/free floating, so there is no oil dampening on the readings. And of course, no declination adjustment.- The criticisms above are obvious and expected for what these are/are intended. But these still point (mag.) north, and are still lensatic compasses. So you can shoot a line of bearing to a distant object, and reasonably map/trek accordingly. These are affordable and good for adolescents learning navigation...or maybe good for a scout leader to buy in bulk for the troop.Bottom Line:For the price and quality, these are kid compasses…or perhaps good for party giveaways….or to give to inexperienced friends who go on hikes without one. But they still function, so I’d rather have one of these in the wild than no compass at all.(Fwiw, it still dumfounds me that inexperienced people still go into the wild without even a button compass. Experienced people can generally manage without one, but it’s still better/easier to have one. Everyone else just makes for good cautionary tales).

This is a great set of compasses for kids to learn land navigation. Just know that this is a kids' light use model.Overall, for the price point and for what this is, it's really pretty good. The accuracy is dead on, the quality is solid and it doesn't feel like a kids' toy that will break in a few uses. It feels like a good learning tool for kids.In terms of the lens and sighting wire setup, these are both solid. I'm able to get a reading quickly, figure out direction of travel and get moving. For an adult, you will have an issue with the thumb ring. I found that it was too small for my thumb to fit through. I'm a 6 ft tall male with average sized thumbs and this doesn't let my thumb slide through past the first knuckle. It's just not wide enough. For a kid, it'll be fine. The bright green color will be good to help kids not lose this in the leaves if they put it down. The ring moves around the bezel very freely with little resistance - a little too freely compared to upper end models. What this means is that as you get your bearing and look at your direction of travel, you'll have to be careful that you get your reading quickly as a small touch of the lens will knock it out of whack and you'll have to retake your reading. This is not a dealbreaker but something to know. The body is made of harder plastic that seems thick enough to protect it from a light closed drop. The dial is also plastic, but not as strong feeling.Overall, these compasses work well and will be great for a kid learning to navigate through the outdoors. And if they happen to break one, they'll have another.
