I bought it because we recently survived a grizzly bear attack, resulting in my wife being airlifted to a trauma center. The bear spray I used worked well enough once I was able to spray it in the eyes. The bear left the scene, then changed its mind and returned to confront me. This usually results in a bad outcome. I kept the can aimed at the bear, but was essentially empty after about five seconds of spraying him at point blank range.——-Our dog confronted the bear, constantly barking, while I raised my arms to look larger and distract him. My wife finally got to our truck & began honking the horn. The bear look toward the sound, and with the dog pressing his attack, retreated into the woods. I got to the truck, called my dog back, and we drove off.I really felt that I could have kept the bear from returning if I’d had a larger capacity can of spray. This one is the largest I could find. (An alternative would be to carry two cans, but it is harder to pull out another can while one is right on top of the bear).——The only downside is that this can is heavier than the average can. More spray does weigh more! For me this is a reasonable trade off, and I am pleased with my purchase. I still intend to carry a standard size can as a backup, however.

FROM TODAY's CNN NEWS (Aug 19 2013): Two hikers at Yellowstone National Park were injured Thursday after they encountered a female grizzly bear and a cub. The sow charged the hikers, leaving claw and bite marks on one, park officials said. The sow and cub left after the hikers sprayed their cans of bear spray."TOLD YOU SO"See belowMy home, Alpine MT, 6300 ft "up" in Beartooth Wilderness area. Grizzly Country. NE corner YSNP. What do I carry, and strongly recommend others carry, the BIG UDAP 18CP Super Magnum Bear Spray. YSNP Rangers and wildlife folks point out that "handguns" unless (1) used by a really competent shooter, and (2) of a "huge" caliber capable of stopping a truck (I have S&W .50 MAG), are just likely to wound, infuriate a bear and initiate their attack/defenses. YSNP Rangers, on foot, confront Griz, standing between tourists and the Grizzly, which is more threat than most realize. They pack BIG bear spray. It really discourages/immobilizes the bear. Turns off that "attack and kill" button. And if a little is good, really big is really good. It has a holster to carry it. If you miss with some, there's a lot more left to finish the job. I have a theory that a bear, once sprayed, will have aversion reactions to getting it twice. I think bears can be trained to say "NO, not that stuff again." Best advice is still, don't get close to Grizzly. Don't EVER get close to cubs because that really sets off MOM.... Don't picnic in bear country without a lookout, and follow the strict rules of the NPS on food storage at night in bear country. But for hiking, and "touristing", Super Magnum Bear Spray is an essential. Bought it for a close friend who patrols in the woods around my home.

Nice and big canister of bear spray. Only objection i have is the 'holster'. It takes effort to get the can out of it and the belt loop doesn't last very long. Found it easier to carry in my side cargo pocket. Easier and faster to get to.

Took on Alaska 2 month solo tent camping trip, and solo canoe trip on Yukon. Never had to use for a Bear. While I had a shotgun, it was nice to take on hikes and around camp where carrying a shotgun was not practical (or safe).Did have 2 drunks try to steal stuff out of my truck one night in Fairbanks and carried the Spray with me when I got out of my tent to run them off. They left without a problem, but I felt better having the can of Bear Spray in my back pocket "just in case".

I live in an alaskan village and my house sits along the tree line and on the schoolgrounds. Small children play there often. Black Bear are common in the area. I have 3 dogs that are out in back. I bought the bear spray in june to take with me hiking on the trails near my home.My dogs had been getting agitated latly. The other night I noticed my dogs were really agitated, and barking I grabbed the bear spray, (not expecting a bear) and went to check on them. A Black bear was in the bushes 3 or so feet from my dog, neither seeemed comfartable with the other. All of the dogs were barking. I did not know what would happen. I yelled at the bear but it stayed where it was stariing at us. I used the bear spray and the black bear did back off and headed into the woods. I sprayed over my dogs head but he also got hit with residual spray and was uncomfartable for quite som time.We looked around and think that the bear has been hanging out here for a while, and have seen signs of him again. So the spray was only a temporary deterant. The authoritys are working to get the bear removed.

This product is amoung the top products available with the most "pepper" for the buck. The chest holder positions this defensive spray in easy reach when you have to react to a bear attack. Sierra Trading Post sells a pepper decontamination spray "Relief" by [...] which would come in handy should you get exposed during it's use. The Magnum Bear Sray also comes with a informative pamphlet on how to handle yourself when you come in contact with bears. I would recommend this to a friend. Amazon should probably do a combination offer to include a practice sprayer, which the company sells, with the real one.
