THE PREVIOUS STEERING BOX HAD A COTTER PIN TO HOLD THE CABLE IN THE BOX. THE CHEAP POT METAL HOLDING THE PIN WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE AND BROKE OUT. I REPLACED IT WITH THIS BOX AND USED THE BOLTS THAT FEED ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO HOLD THE CABLE IN THE HOUSING. THE PREVIOUS BOX FED FROM THE BOTTOM AND THIS ONE FED FROM THE TOP. HAD TO TAKE IT APART AND START OVER. PIECE OF CAKE!! WOULD PURCHASE AGAIN.

Did not like the fact that rotary helm was not supplied with mounting hardware

I installed this helm on my 2004 PT 175 Tracker. I also purchased a new cable, since the original cable is not compatible. The steering now feels like new.

I got this to fix the steering on my boat. It was realitivly easy to put in, even with out instructions. It was a reopened package that was returned because it didn't have instructions. Just watched a U-tube and got it done. Getting the old one out was a little tough but the boat steers now and I didn't just jury-rig a fix that could have broke while on the water this winter.

First, don't confuse this unit with the Teleflex helm like I did the first purchase. The two units have different clearances and the Uflex allows for a more centralized mounting while the Teleflex has an offset away from the cable attachment. If clearance is a problem, this unit provides a solution. I found that the brand name for this unit is on the bezel kit. The helm turns smoothly and easily with little pushback on a 15hp motor. Installation requires a bezel kit sold separately and a push fit steering cable, unless you salvage your old items. My old unit lasted 17+ years before the steering shaft slowly eroded away and finally snapped off in a salt water enviornment. Good value for a boat part.
