This demon crab snuck in by way of some life rock. I discovered it after my Florida Fighting Conch (snuffleupagus) was murdered. Once I was able to identify the perpetrator, things got real.I found a molting and placed the trap in the vicinity the first night. That was just our crafty criminal trying to throw me off the trail. The next night I was able to identify the whole he was hiding in. I tucked some nori wrapped shrimp in the very very back of this trap and the game was a foot. The gorilla came out swinging. I mean literally. The crab picked up this trap with its claw and lifted it up trying to knock the food out. This also wound up closing the door to the trap so no joy for the bully.I put a small rock on top of the trap to make it more difficult for him to move. Then I used a clear pipe bed to push the door back open. I also use the pipette to squeeze some shrimp juice back into the trap to further entice.I shut off all the lights and left the room. Less than an hour later, there was a very angry crab stuck inside the trap. It was rocking the trap back and forth trying to turn it over. I strongly advise weighing it down. These crabs are stronger than you'd expect. I pulled the trap and put the crab into this wonton soup container. I think if I had left him in the trap for any period of time he would have broken it to pieces trying to get out.Overall, this worked! I had my doubts but I have apprehended the murdering crustacean. Today it will be released back into the Gulf of Mexico from wense it came.If you have fresh live rock, get this. A $15 trap can save a $50 fish. Easy math. Plus, it is so very satisfying.

I had a few peppermint shrimp in my nano tank that had start harassing everything else in the tank and needed to go. I tried everything else from a net to a DIY bottle solution. Caught the little $&@! within a few hours. I used magnates to hold it in place and a bit above the ground so crabs and snails didn’t get in. Also used a dried brine shrimp glued to a tiny magnate so it stuck in the back and didn’t float out. Worked like a charm.

Cheap crap. Just take out your live rock and scoop up the mantis shrimp. No waiting for the trap (which didn't work for me).

This thing gets a solid 5 star rating for design and function, and a solid 1 star rating for quality and craftsmanship. It really is a flimsy piece of junk. The first one I ordered arrived broken, and even though the parts were there, I could not repair it as to get at the broken piece, the door needed to be closed... I returned it and got a new one, have caught a few different things in my tank, not the mantis shrimp yet, but based on how it works, I think it will happen when I get the timing and placement right. It catches the first thing in... There is really no other option to this if you want to go the trap route, so get it, but don't be disappointed if it arrives broken!

This trap is listed as a mantis shrimp trap, but has a good design for catching any kind of elusive/tricky shrimp living in a reef aquarium. The alternatives are tearing up your rockwork and trying to rig a DIY trap. This trap worked better than previous DIY bottle traps because it has a closing trap door and holds water. When properly baited with a meaty hunk of fish/shrimp on the trigger mechanism, it's very effective. With the trap door securely closed, the trap can be removed while retaining water - allowing you to quarantine/remove the shrimp. Be sure to use one large piece of meat vs. a frozen block of mysis, since it will dissolve/float out of the trap and won't trigger properly. We had three large peppermint shrimps that outgrew our nano reef tank and began eating our corals (lost a beautiful Acan, half a meteor shower, and one head of Hammer Coral) until I deployed this trap. I had been trying with no luck for weeks to get these shrimp out before this.I can't recommend this enough.

To say this product is sub-par would be an understatement. I'm not saying this product was inefficient, or was just built so cheaply made that it fell apart after one use no, that would be a flat out lie, as I was not able to set this trap to begin with. While I do believe this product can be made to work (eventually), it is not worth the effort, as it was only after about an hour of trying to modify the door and tripping mechanism that I became so frustrated with it that I broke it into pieces. I did however recycle those pieces so perhaps a worth while product can be made the 2nd time around or the 3rd or 4th. Don't waste your time and money on this worthless product you're only setting yourself up for disappointment, honestly compared to this device one would have better luck with an non-baited hook.

After two months of trying to catch the little booger with a home made bottle trap and a store loaned "tube" trap, I broke down and ordered this thing. I have my live rock zip tied together with corals on it, so I didn't want to break it apart. I had see the shrimp in the other two traps only once and he squirted out like it was nothing before I could even get to the string to haul his little butt out of there. With this trap, I caught him the second day I tried it (the first day I had not set the sensitivity low enough). After two months of trying, two days later I had him! Woohoo! The nice features of this trap is that it is tinted which makes the little guy not so shy about going in, but you can still see into it to know if he is there or your bait s still in there. The pressure release is adjustable and simple to operate. The door snaps shut once he is inside and locks the little guy in. It also holds water so it doesn't drain when you pull it out. Unlike other reviewers, my trap came in without issues, even though it was just put in a padded envelope and tossed in the mail. So, I am THRILLED with this trap! The bad news.... I'm still hearing snapping. :( Glad the trap is re-useable.
