HOW TO TUNE THE KALIMBA:
To keep your kalimba sounding good, learning to tune is the most important thing.
1. Download the tune APP.
2. Tune with the hammer.
Making tines longer (from the point where they are held down on the bridge) will lower their pitch, making them shorter will make their pitch higher.

I really like this kamliba. The first one i received did not come in any box, just the shipping bag with a tuning hammer and a guide. It was beautiful but I was upset that it did not have a box to protect it. It is easy to tune and comfortable to hold, even with smaller sized hands.I ordered a replacement which came in a shrink wrapped box. This one smelled of camphor when I opened it and was also completely in tune from opening. It also had a additional accessories like a soft cloth and song booklet.Aside from receiving what must have been a return on my first shipment, the kalimba itself is great.This kalimba was recommended in videos and I agree that it’s comfortable for a beginner.

UPDATE 4/27/2023 Whem I first, wrote this review to say how much I love this instrument, but that it unfortunately didn't come with the tuning tool, I expected some action from this company. I have seen YouTuve videos and read reviews, where when the company was told that something was wrong, or in my case, something was missing (the tuning tool) the company would make it right by sending them a replacement or sending them what they had neglected to send. So I really assumed that this company would send me the tuning tool that was supposed to come with my product. I have been extremely patient. I received my product on April 115h, made the review on the same day (I think), here it is, the 27th of April, and no tuning tool was sent, I hadn't even heard one peep from this company. I don't know if this company just doesn't care if they just didn't read the message Amazon sent them on my behalf, or if Amazon had failed to give them my message. But if I were you, even though this instrument is lovely, I wouldn't buy from this company.-----------I did research on this instrument first, then with the notes I'd taken I went to Amazon and I was surprised to find one that a professional Kalimba player had suggested was on sale. I couldn't pass it up, especially after watching the reviews. I was so excited! It arrived today and I fell in love with it immediately. Looks great, feels great, and sounds great, however, it didn't come with a tuning tool. And it was supposed to. With the help of Amazon, I sent the company a message telling them that I loved it but they neglected to include the Tuning Tool and that if they would send it to me I'd be eternally grateful. I'm having fun with it, but I really need to tune it, also I want everything it's supposed to come with. Still love it, maybe my next purchase will be the hollow one.

I purchased this when I was first starting to learn how to play the kalimba. It was initially tuned to B major, but I tuned it down to G major because the top tines were too short and didn't resonate well. That changed when I tuned it down, and they all sound fine now. Each tine is labeled with both a number and a letter note (for example: the bottom tine is labeled with B as well as 1, with the number corresponding to the B in a B major scale. A 2 corresponds to a C sharp, a 3 with a D sharp, etc.).This instrument is also lightweight, and I found it easy to teach myself how to play it. My only complaint is that having only 17 tines makes the range too limited, but that's just how it is with 17-tine kalimbas. If you're looking for more range, I would recommend something with 21 tines, but if you're okay with 17, this is a fantasic pick.

I bought these for my preschool class. The kids love them. They are the perfect size for small hands and using them will help build fine motor muscles. They make a soft, lovely sound. The booklet they come with has a few songs to try, but the print is quite small and harder to read. All in all I'm satisfied with my purchase.

I usually play ukulele but I was interested in trying out a kalimba. I knew Gecko/JonasC was regarded as a good brand and when I saw this model on sale for an amazing price I said yeehaw let's do it!I haven't pulled out my chromatic tuner yet, but it sounds at least ballpark straight from the box to my ear. As I have no other experience with kalimbas I can't compare the sound with other makes/models. The tines all feel solid enough and the wood reverberates when played, so I'm happy.So this is a great buy for the eleven bucks I paid! Great instrument to leave around on the coffee table to tink with, and my kids will love it.
