I really enjoy both the designs and the historical information on the designs included in this book. As someone who has knitted for over 20 years and who has always enjoyed traditional styles of knitting, this book is right up my alley. I like the way the authors provide a twist on traditional designs, yet still maintain the historical aspects and the classic look I prefer in my knitting.

Beautifully presented book of attractive designs with lots of illustrations which made me want to knit them all. On closer inspection, the patterns have a lot of quite advanced techniques such as 'short rows', 'steeking' and knitting in the round, so this is not a book for the novice. These techniques seem well-explained so I am intending to try some of the patterns and expand my knowledge. I bought it because I saw the cover pattern from it knitted on the 'Ravelry' website, where there are lots of helpful hints if you get stuck!

There are many designs in the volume that I wish to make which is saying a lot .Many times a book will have just one or two patterns for which I want to possess it. I love the choices of yarns and the styles and the book is sensibly written and directions clear to follow.

I got this book for Christmas, there are a few designs in here I like but definitely not on the list of one of my favorite knitting books.

Beautiful patterns, lovely muted colours. Not exactly vintage. Its subtitle: 'contemporary designs using classic techniques' is more accurate. The designs are contemporary, yet timeless. If you make something out of this book, you will still be wearing it in ten years time.Excellent information on the yarns used: brand name, colour name, yarn composition, yards and meters per 50 grs.Patterns are described in writing. If necessary, a chart is added. If you own any other books published by Interweave, you will know that their books are always high quality, both in content and appearance, and beautifully styled. In this book you will find:5 cardigans3 pullovers3 shawls/scarves1 mittens1 hand warmers1 mittens and leg warmers1 mittens and beret1 leg warmers1 over the knee stockings3 berets/hatstechniques are fair isle, lace, textured knit, cables, Estonian inlay (once). To me five of the 22 patterns looked a bit homely, and I can't imagine I shall ever want to make them, but that means there are still 17 left. I find that a very good score. My favourites are the accessories - leg and handwarmers, mittens, scarf, and the beautiful pullover on the book cover.Ofcourse you can find similar patterns on the internet, but if you love books, why should you prefer handfuls of home printed loose leaves to a real book? I will choose a book anytime (call me old-fashioned.....).So, go on, treat yourself!

A lot of books like to call their patterns "Vintage" without really seeming to understand the word. The patterns in this book are truly vintage, classic designs often with a modern twist but things you will be able to wear for a long time afterwards. I have done two of the patterns so far, one shawl and the faire isle yoke sweater on the cover and they turned out great! The instructions are concise and well worded. Very easy to understand. The explanation of short rows in the yoke sweater is the best one I've seen yet. I had bought this for the Brigid Jacket pattern but liked so many things in here I still have that one in my queue. Definitely a book with many appealing workable patterns to expand your wardrobe for years to come. I've already bought it for a friend and she's still raving about it! If I have any complaint it is that there are no men's patterns in here. Not that I think there should be one in every knitting book, but I like the patterns so much in here I would love to see what these ladies could do with a nice guy's cardigan or pullover. Other than that, this book is absolutely perfect! You need to buy it! :)

Sick of schlock when it comes to knitting? Don't want to show your belly or wear fun fur for your cameo role in a Jon Waters film? Then this is the book for you! These patterns really are very nice - classic shapes and designs with just enough of a twist to keep you from being a total nerd. Relatively speaking, this reviewer is an old fart when it comes to knitting and, though I LOVE that younger people are really getting into it, there are times when I want something I can actually wear to work without looking on the outside like the wild woman I am on the inside.Well done Ms. Kelley and Ms. Osborn! BTW, there is one cropped sweater, but because I can simply lengthen it, I forgive you!

I waited for this book to come out because I had seen previews of a couple of the patterns. I am glad I got it! Though I am not likely to make everything, I do like most of the patterns. I especially like the two shawls and the cardigans. The yarns are beautiful and are sold by the shop that the authors' own. Both are on ravelry.com and are willing to answer questions regarding the patterns by e-mail.Considering that individual patterns now run $5-8 each, a book at this price is a bargain if you plan to make 2 or 3 of the items in the book.
