Introducing the New StudSensor e50
The StudSensor e50 quickly and easily locates the edges of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and ceilings. It has two scanning modes that allow you to scan more surfaces in your home than normal stud finders:
- STUD SCAN mode locates the edges and center of wood or metal studs in normal walls up to 3/4 inch (19 mm) deep
- DEEPSCAN mode doubles the scanning depth for walls up to 1-1/2 inches (38 mm) deep, and it enables scanning for joists in some ceilings and floors
For the e50, Zircon has wrapped up their proven, patented technology into a revolutionary new form. The e50's new body design can be held comfortably in either hand at any angle and reduces normal scanning errors. The rubber overmolded grip also gives you a secure hold.
In addition to a new shape and updated components, the StudSensor e50 offers several additional features to make finding studs and joists as easy and as accurate as possible:

I bought this to replace a three times more expensive branded German make that told me I had live wires in the middle of a composite door.So far it's working well, I've had an issue when searching for studs the device can make them slightly wider than they are in reality through thin surfaces, but it's manageable once you understand it's querks.

This worked great when I got it a couple years ago and used inside the house. The other day I got it out again to find some studs in the garage/house wall. It found one consistently but the rest were about a foot wide or caused it to start flashing. I got out the magnetic one to find screws in the drywall and they were all 16" on center...Even lined up with the stud this tool found. Drilled holes, went into drywall, a thin section of resistance, then into insulation. OK, so the screws were misleading.I changed the batteries since the WireWarning detection icon kept showing up, but same result. After about 20 minutes I decided to order a new, more expensive stud finder from another company and smashed this one into the concrete. Cover flew off, battery came out. I asked my wife to borrow her dad's stud finder and turns out he has the same one. He said it's probably the garage firewall so check from inside the house. Sure enough, the one I smashed (still worked even though the top was partially detached) found a stud in the closet. Figured out a way to estimate the same distance from the door frame and used a finishing nail to determine depth. Bingo! Measured 16" on center from there and hit studs every time.

This thing works well, as long as you're aware that the sensor is not shielded at all from objects on your side of the wall.This means that, say, if you're working in a cramped space, or awkward position, or even standing too close, and your face or hand gets too close to the back of the sensor, you can get false readings. Or if it's initialized with something close to the back of the sensor, which is then taken away, it might fail to find anything in the wall.Once I'd figured that out, it worked well... but frustrating that you have to be so careful with it. Is there no way to add some sort of shielding on the side of the device away from the wall??? And do other devices have this same problem?To illustrate, imagine the device is extended to your right, then you drag it left towards your body... if your body/head/cat/moose gets too close, it can set off the detector, giving you a false reading. Or try with a pencil... initialize the device against a wall, then bring a pencil close to the back of the device; for me, it triggers when the pencil is an inch or two from the back... I'm pretty sure I'm not Magneto, and that this same thing must be happening for others...

This review is for the Zircon StudSensor e50. I've used it on two separate occasions now, and with a little patience, found all studs I needed without any misses. Pretty much dummy proof if you've ever used a stud finder before or read the instructions. I used it on textured drywall and it worked well. The live electric wire function did seem to give a general idea if you were near an outlet and such. Not sure I'd trust it as the only means of identifying a live wire though as that function is fairly general. Fits well in the hand and the felt padding stuff seems like it's holding up well with my limited use thus far. I'd buy it again, and think it was worth the extra 5 bucks for the screen, as it gives some hints of when you're approaching a stud edge allowing you to be a bit more precise.

I was initially hesitant to purchase this product after hearing negative things about electronic stud-sensors from my father-in-law and my handyman. Their advice was to go the old tried and true methods of tapping on the wall or using a finishing screw to confirm the location of a stud - both not an exact science either.I spent the past weekend hanging various pictures, artwork, mirrors and other objects in my home after some recent remodeling work and I am THRILLED with the performance of the Zircon StudSensor e50! I can't say enough how well this product works!The unit is super-easy to use and features a ergonomic grip with the power button recessed where you thumb will go. The unit automatically shuts off when the power button isn't depressed, saving battery-life. The onscreen indicator is virtually fool-proof and indicates the edge and center of a stud based on the completeness of the onscreen triangle. After finding center-stud the unit activates a small arrow-shaped laser indicating where to make your mark. Perfectly easy to use.I'm happy to say that this sensor even saved me from a costly rookie mistake. I was planning on hanging a heavy mirror in my master bedroom and completely forgot that a pocket door was on the same wall. I kept scanning for a stud and I was receiving strange readings from the sensor. After initially thinking the sensor was malfunctioning I realized my mistake, thankfully before any drilling or nailing had taken place.This stud sensor is now a permanent part of my toolbox. Recommended!
