These function exactly as they should and quite well i might add. The quality is great and they fell good in hand. The sharpness is surprisingly very good I've have far more expensive versions needed sharpening upon arrival prior to using them but not these they arrive with a fine, sharp edge. The handles fit comfortably in your palm like a much higher priced tool and this makes them a worthwhile purchase. Overall I highly recommend this product for a beginner or practiced wood carver the set is very nice and practical.

In the interest of full disclosure, as a trusted and unbiased Amazon reviewer, I was able to request this product free of charge. This is a good price for 12 chisels. Although the handles are not wood, they seem pretty stout. I used one for about 10 minutes and there was some discoloring at the base, but nothing to cause any problems. I much prefer the wooden handles and especially prefer when the handles have a metal striking surface at the end. However, I wouldn't expect to see this with a 12 piece chisel set at this price point. The appearance of the steel seems good and the blades are straight and inline with the handles. There were a few blades where the flutes started off center, but closer to the cutting edge they completely evened out.The one major drawback is that out of the box only 1-2 chisels were sharp enough to use - the chisel that is like a skew but beveled on only 1 side, and of the straight edge chisels. I will probably have to spend a few hours at the grinder and honing in order to get the rest of the chisels into usable shape.I did try out the skew like chisel and was able to make some small detail cuts by hand (no mallet) in some pine. The cuts seemed clean. With one of the straight edge chisels, I used a mallet and I would say it was cutting well in pine. Now, I am not by any means an experienced carver. I would say I'm probably less experienced than a beginner. I primarily do woodturning, but I wanted to try my hand at a little carving. It's a good skill to have.If you are like me and you want something to play around with and gain some experience, this is a good set because you get a lot of different chisels. You will have to invest a bit of time sharpening. The gouges were exceptionally dull. Those are also going to be the hardest to sharpen. The remainder of the tools have flat edges and those should be fairly straight forward. As long as you don't mind investing some time in sharpening, these appear to be a good set, but I have only used a few of them for a few minutes so I can't assess how the steel holds up over time. One other thing the title is a bit misleading, of the 12 tools, 7 of them are gouges, the rest are straight edge and v chisels

There are plenty of photos already so I don’t feel the need to repeat photos. This is a set of 12 carving chisels that has a mix of the right starter chisels and comes in a well made box that is suitable for gift giving. As others have stated, the tool bag is more afterthought than useful. I tried to put one chisel in the tool bag and decided that I would simply make a box holder rather than waste time on the tool bag. The bag made it difficult to get the tools in and out and definitely won’t last with sharp chisels. But again, this is a starter set so the bag could find a person who appreciates just having a bag for the chisels.I did find that every chisel needed some touch up work. There were light burs and scratches on the blade. That has a direct impact on work and each chisel needed a little edge refinement before I could use them without subjecting myself to excess sanding. Most of the impact work for me comes from tapping, rather than a hard strike but knowing the handle material would be nice.CRV-60 is great tool steel. No issue there. A CRV-60 sharp chisel should remain sharp for a while. Takes longer to resharpen when they need it but a little regular maintenance goes a long way.Seeing this as more of a starter set as opposed to high end chisels for a seasoned pro, I’m thinking the kit could have used a small mallet to complete the package. But that would have probably increased the price. For the price, this is already a very nice set.Overall a solid 4 stars from me. Great price for a well made starter set. Great packaging for gift giving. Minor flaws with a cheap tool bag and each tool needing minor edge refinement but for a starter set this would be a very good purchase.

I do a lot of carving and own 100+ professional carving gouges. I’m always interested in testing inexpensive sets to see how they compare to my expensive tools. This is a great set for the money. At $65 for the set of 12 gouges, the quality compares favorably to many of my heavy duty name-maker gouges. The gouges are high hardness chromium steel, which is ideal for carving chisels. Any harder, and they would be difficult to sharpen. As shown in my photo of the bevel edge, you do need to hone these before using them. They are provided with precisely ground bevels, but you should get something like an inexpensive set of diamond slips with grits between 400 and 3000 to polish the back edges and bevels before first first use. But it’s not difficult - just rub the sharpening stones against the edges without pressing too hard or ruining the bevels until the machine marks are gone, and then do the same flat against the back edges (being careful not to create a back bevel) until at least the top 1/8” is shiney. The assortment of tools provided is about perfect for a starter set of carving tools. The only thing I don’t care for on this set are the handles. I can’t tell if they are some type of wood or a composite plastic without digging into a handle and scarring it, which I didn’t want to do. I’m not going to down rate the set because of the handles but in my opinion the value of the set would be higher if the handles were made of beech, maple or a similar hardwood.
