The handle I got was very skinny and very unwieldy. I chose to use a piece of ash wood instead. But the head of the tool is very sharp, very well made, and has a great design for gardening.

Too cute. This was a b-day present for my Mom, she loves it. Its light weight and is perfect for weeds and chopping things. It arrived early, and it was sharp right out of the box. I hammered the head tight on the handle, and it works great. Its inexpensive and I definitely think you should get one.

bought this as a lightweight hatchet and mattock combo for backpacking. lighter than i imagined with a total weight of under 13 ounces. the mattock works great for digging small catholes even in packed dirt and gravel. i tried leveraging the mattock end to test the strength, and was satisfied when moderate pressure caused no bending or breakage. the hatchet i am reserving judgement as it cut better after sharpening, but will need to see how well it holds an edge. i was chop through a 2x4 in about a minute, and able to split some 12" 2x4's into kindling. it would likely cut and split better if the head was heavier and used a traditional wedge shape like a hatchet.... the handle is thin, but took a couple of good whacks without any signs of weakness. i was able to use in brief without issue, but i think i will add leather or paracord to give my large hands more purchase. the head comes separate, so after installation i tapped the upper part of the handle on a flat rock a few times and that set the head firmly in place with no further movement. i was impressed enough that i will be trying this on the next backpacking excursion....

Although the photos make it look much larger, and the dimensions were correct. You kind of expected the head to be much larger... Not, bad... but takes alot to keep he head fastened.

At first I thought it was a joke--it is so small and light. However, it has proven to be very usable in tight spots and I've grown to like it much more than initially. I had blackberries growing against the house foundation and interspersed among shrubs and flowers. My large mattox was difficult to swing without collateral damage, but this small pickaxe worked great. I may replace the handle with one a few inches longer--but it is handy at its current length.

Works very well small and effective as a digger and chopper on vines and weeds in the garden
