These much better than expected.Hardness files put these at 55 almost 60 on the rockwell hardness scaleThe blade angle is 25%, but hollow ground on a round wheel so they come with microbevel.Whispy shavings pine and red oak right out of the boxMuch longer than a new Hock blade, a hair thicker.I'm looking for matching chip breakers because the vintage stanley ones are loose on the lateral adjuster, and need to allow the blade to stick out more than I'd prefer. Even with 3/4 sticking out I'm not getting chatter though.

Quality coincides with price. I use these for cleaning edge banding and glue residue off of wood panels. Works exceptionally well for my purpose.Stays sharp for a very long time. Would buy again if necessary.

I bought the blades to see if they would upgrade an older #5 plane. The original plane had a very thin blade and I thought I’d give these a try. These are .110” vs .071” on the original. I read all the bad reviews and attributed them to purchasers that really didn’t understand how to prep a plane blade.Even the best plane blades often need tuning a regular resharpening. I bought these, softened the edges with a file and reground the bevel to exactly 25 degrees and flattened the back using my wet grinder. There was a slight bow in the blade which was easy to fix as only the first inch of the blade is tempered. Simply put it in my bench vice and gave a tap with my mallet. Then added a 27 degree secondary micro bevel. My original chip breaker cap fit fine. All of the above took a little over an hour while the second blade took only 15 minutes as I now knew exactly what needed to be done.I had to modify the throat with a file, opening it up a 1/32” to accommodate the thicker blade. I did some test cuts with both pine and hard maple. I was able to get really nice paper thin shavings with both woods with little effort. I’m not sure how long the edge will hold up but the temper is advertised as 60-62. As I’m not sure how it will hold up I am only giving it a 4. If the edge holds up and doesn’t need to be resharpened often I’d revise it to a 5.

Anything but sharp edge - the edges were all banged up and need major re-work to be usable. How can this get out of the factory with such terrible cutting edge?

While the quality of the steel seemed good, I spent about 2 hours removing the grinding marks. Another problem I had was the length of the slot for the cap iron screw. I had to file the slot to make it longer so that I could retract the iron into the mouth on one of my (non Stanley) planes.

I bought these irons to make dowel jigs so I don't have to waste my good ones on a jig. When I was preparing the backs, I found that these irons were not true...they where cupped a wee bit. I'm not surprised being they are Chinese but they will work fine for the purpose I need. Buyer beware, don't count on these irons to be high performers if you are going to use them in your bench plane...or perhaps make them into scrub plane irons. Also, the slot on these irons are upside down from a Stanley type plane, with the chip breaker screw hole on the wrong end of the iron, which doesn't really affect the performance, but it's just odd.

Sharp. Very sharp! Works well when used with a plane. Does not work well chopping onions. It is most effective when used to plane wood because that is what is made for. Performs poorly when used for throwing at a target.

After 40 or so minutes: filing down rough edges, lapping the backside, and putting on a 30° secondary at the sharpening station, I put blade into a $15 garage sale rehab #14 Shelton and was making .001" pine shavings. Probably not as nice as aftermarket Hock and Lee Valley blades, but for half the price and double the blades (and 0.125" thick) I'm pretty happy with the purchase
