The description of these lists them as "imitation" rattan. I didn't see anything stating what they're made of, they feel like plastic. They are woven out of plastic strands that look to be the same diameter as tradition wicker/rattan. There's no variation or striation since it's not a natural material, but it is very nice! One benefit of these not being wicker is the lack of the ends sticking out all over or splinters. I love that I can just throw these in a sick and wash them. They have some flexibility, just like wicker, and once you fill them with food no one notices they're plastic. The lids are very clear. I could not get the handle screws in straight or all the way in so, against my better judgement, I used the screwdriver attachment on my drill and barely touched the trigger. Screws went in fine then, but I did manage to bounce the screwdriver point across the top a little and it left a barely discernable scratch that can only be seen in the right light. That leads me to believe these won't be scratched during normal use easily. I know I'm planning to use these with a large linen napkin or tea towel and place hot bread rolls or chocolate covered strawberries in, but the options are endless since they can be washed! I've seen others of this sort on here for twice the price, so I'm very happy.
