These are a must have for anyone with kids in hockey. They are NOT going to keep your skates sharp - but they do work amazing for when your kid steps on something they shouldn't, and gets a nick in the blade - just run the flat part along the side of the blade, and it will come out. To be honest - I've got no clue what the "V" part is for - i suppose you could sharpen a knife with that?My son had an out door practice the day before these arrived - let's just say i was glad i had them before his next practice, this took out all the kicks that he managed to get in the blades while on the out door rink.

My son plays hockey and we are constantly needing to get his skates sharpened. These handheld sharpeners are great to keep in his hockey bag. If he needs to give his skates a little more edge to hold over until the next sharpening or if he gets a little nick that he wants to smooth out during a game, these work well. They definatley don't take the place of a regular skate sharpening, but do help when you are in a pinch.
