The VL53L1X is a state-of-the-art, Time-of-Flight (ToF), laser-ranging sensor, enhancing the ST FlightSense product family. It is the fastest miniature ToF sensor on the market with accurate ranging up to 4 m and fast ranging frequency up to 50 Hz

Unlike conventional IR sensors, the VL53L1X uses ST's latest generation ToF technology which allows absolute distance measurement whatever the target color and reflectance.

It is also possible to program the size of the ROI on the receiving array, allowing the sensor FoV to be reduced.

I get reliable detection of a light surface (near-white painted wall) out to 3.2 meters, far better than the 1.2 meters I got with the VL53L0x which is the little brother of this device. The repeatability on the VL53L1X is good enough to clearly see my breathing rate (chest motion of 1 to 2 cm) from a distance of more than one meter. This is using the slowest measuring rate, a 500 msec timing budget so you get a new value 2x per second. Looks like it takes about 10 mA current when running continually. A key feature is that it comes with tiny custom cover for the chip with two separate windows, so the TX laser doesn't get light-piped over to blind the RX sensor. Using either this or the VL53L0X sensor without a cover in a real application is asking for trouble, I'd think the apertures would inevitably become blocked with stray dust particles. Overall I'm impressed by this sensor, and would recommend if this is something you find useful.
