Planting more vegetables with these grow bags (e.g. potato planting)

  1. Mix the soil with the fertilizer, then add 4 inches of them to the bag. Place 4-6 potato tubers on that soil, with the shoots facing upwards, and add a further 2 inches of soil to cover them.
  2. As long as the soil does not completely dry out, it is good to wait about 2 weeks for the plants to emerge before watering again.
  3. Keep watering when shoots have germinated. When the plants are 12" tall, add 6 inches of soil around the base of plants and watering.
  4. Once they have grown another 12" above the soil, repeat the front process until the bags are nearly full. Keep them well watered, especially in dry weather.
  5. Wait about 7-8 weeks, till the foliage has turned brown and died back completely, then you can harvest potatoes directly from the Velcro window.

These potato planters are of a thick fabric that feels like flannel (it's not), and they stand up well when filled with soil. I faithfully watered the potato starts daily with the right amount of water, but did not have success. My gardener daughter said she tried some of these and they seemed to heat up too much. So I set these on my patio in an area that gets only morning sun, and I also put silk ivy plants into the top (after a couple weeks) to see if that would keep them from overheating. I still haven't had success. I would imagine though, that with successful starts, harvesting the potatoes would work well, as the front flap opens largely enough to reach in and retrieve potatoes. The flaps also have strong velcro edging that keeps them in place until opened. I give the product 5 Stars, though my gardening skills may be lacking.
