These work much better than regular pop rivets.

With the stainless steel construction and self-sealing design, these are ideal for marine applications where corrosion and waterproofing are a concern. They are heavy duty and offer a strong shear and tensile rating. The cup-style mandrel is an interesting design, and ensures linear expansion, not curled over like softer rivets with ball mandrels experience. However, these therefore have a longer finished plug on the backside, so would not be as flush as conventional pop rivets. The expansion on the backside also is not as wide, but they could be backed up with a washer. The rivets I tested expanded from .18" (3/16") to .22", a couple hundredths less expansion than a conventional rivet. The force required with a hand riveter was moderate, not as difficult to draw as some double drum SS rivets I've used. The pin popped smoothly and remained just below flush, and should provide a fairly waterproof seal. The head of these rivets is designed to be countersunk when the thickness of the material permits, which would make for a smooth finished surface and reduce water or air drag on an exterior skin/hull. With the 5/8" length of these, one could use them for a combined thickness grip range up to 1/2". Be aware with the cup style pin that they will stick out the backside further when gripping thicker materials. These would be good for hull leaks or attachments, and provide corrosion resistant, strong, and smooth finish on one side of the attachment. The price is reflective of the unique design. I was not impressed with the packaging, which let the rivets come loose in the delivery box. Luckily none were released into the mail system, but a little better box, bag, or application of tape could have kept them contained and earned that last elusive star in my rating.

These rivets are of excellent quality, very strong. With a bit of countersinking they sit almost flush. They do require quite a bit of force to set, but that is to be expected in a stainless rivet of this size. Great quality; recommended.
