I own several (6) rock tumblers, from hobbyist to more industrial. Most are rotary tumblers (like this one), but I also have a vibratory tumbler. My point is that I have a lot of experience with several different tumblers, and for the price, this is a pretty good deal. When I first received this tumbler, I was very leery. The motor inside the base was not secured on my unit, so when I picked it up and tilted it from one side to the other, the motor slid around inside the base. This was very concerning. I didn't think it would last very long as this pointed to poor quality control. However, once I got this tumbler set up in its permanent place and got it rolling, it has been a work horse! It has outlasted every other hobby tumbler I own or have tried! It is still tumbling stones today, over a year and many pounds of rock later. I mainly tumble agate and petrified wood. The rock that came with it, were not ideal, but I have found, hobbyist rock tumblers always come with an assortment of low quality rocks of varying hardness that don't tend to tumble well together, so this wasn't a surprise. I didn't get this tumbler for its stones.Pros:- Large rubber barrel (Not hard plastic)- this means quieter tumbling- Variable speeds- This allows you to run the first phase at a faster rpm resulting in faster turn around. But when you get to later stages, you can slow the rpms down and protect your polishing rocks from bruising and chipping.- Comes with ceramic media to help "cushion" your rocks in later phases, thus protecting them and helping them to get a better finish- Timer- I can set the days to tumble from 1-9 days. This is a longer window than some of my other hobbyist tumblers.- Price- For what you get, this is the best priced hobbyist tumbler I ownCons:- Internal Motor was not secured. If I moved this around a lot, the motor connections would eventually come loose or break. I don't know if this was just my unit or if all units are like this. There have been no ill effects to the motor yet, but I also don't move it around. I could see how a unit could be damaged in shipping if the motors are not secure inside the unit.Overall, I am giving this 5 stars because it has outlasted/tumbled all my other hobbyist tumblers. It is my go-to tumbler for phase 1 tumbling when I am doing small stones or small batches. I love the adjustable speed and that I can set it to tumble for 9 days instead of just 7 like my other hobbyist tumblers. I'd buy this tumbler again.

I used this kit to make smooth gemstones with an older grandson. We followed the directions and used the kit of supplies provided. Everything was laid out in an easy to understand manner. The machine is pretty loud so putting it in a spare bedroom or garage may be the best option. After a while you start to ignore it but it’s not a quiet process. Plus the machine has to run quite a long time on each cycle, so just something to think about. At the of the time and our grits, we had a wonderful collection of smooth stones. The tumbler worked just as I had hoped and it was a good learning experience for him. He was always eager to go to the next step. (It also worked on patience!) I would recommend, we had a great time using it.

It's been doing it's job quite well, just find someplace to put it that you can't hear it.

My daughter loves gemstones, and getting a chance to polish them and tumble them for her cages is amazing for her. The only flaw is that it takes a very long time, but unfortunately, that's just science. It's relatively quiet for what it is and has worked well thus far.

Update: We got to the 3rd cycle and everything fell apart, literally - the tumbler stopped working, the water and dust leaked horribly out making a huge mess, and the machine just wouldn't start back up. Nothing we did would stop it from leaking or keep it going, so we had to stop mid-3rd cycle. Lowering to a 2 star from 4This is super cool - it's well made, it gives you everything you need to make your first batch of "pretty rocks" as my son calls them, and the instruction book gives you a bunch of neat information about types of rocks and rock tumbling as a hobby in general. However, here is why it's a 4 star instead of a 5 star - the instructions are not super clear on how the system works. It's actually super easy and once I figured it out I had no issues - but I've never owned a rock tumbler before (I got this for my husband and son) and there were several minutes of confusion as I couldn't find the materials (they were in the tumbler), I couldn't figure out how to open things without breaking them, and it wasn't super clear how to put everything back in together. So in the end I am glad we have it as my boys are happy and it really is very cool - I just wish the instructions were a little more clear for people that have never done anything like this before.

This rock tumbler is designed to smooth and polish rocks over the course of almost a month - four cycles of several days each. It comes with a number of rough stones (including amethyst and tiger's eye) and we added in a few of our own.One the second cycle we ran into problems - the canister leaked slightly and that stopped the motor. We were able to get it going again with a new rubber belt (of which there were a couple of spares provided). On the fourth cycle, it happened again, but worse. (And yes, I had double checked the seal and tightened things as tight as I could.) This time all the liquid leaked out, and we had to stop the cycle after two days, instead of the full seven. I had no more grit left, so I wasn't able to continue. So the rocks are not quite finished but they still look pretty good, and the kids love them. But I doubt we will ever run the machine again, since (a) I am not sure the motor will hold up for another four cycles (though it still did run after I had cleaned it up), (b) we would have to buy new packets of grit, and (c) we would have to find enough rocks to make it worthwhile. So I fear it may be a single use machine.
