I have two of these, styles E and F. Both work equally well for embossing as long as you're not using something that's too thick or heavy. Metal plates wouldn't have that issue, but you can only do so much with plastic. I have my concerns about these plates' longer-term usability, but it wouldn't be fair of me to take additional stars off for something that could happen but hasn't. Needless to say, I will update this review should either one fall short of my expectations.

I am a mixed media artist and like to have a lot of texture in my paintings, both visual and tactile. I use these embossing folders to emboss paper that I paint and add to my art as part of collage. But I also use these to impress shapes into my wet paint on my gelli plate (I then clean them before the paint dries and sets so the plates can be used as embossing folders again). This particular design works well in cart creations reflecting either uban and or punk themes. The original use for these embossing folders is for making cards with them and this folder works as well as any other one I have for use in card making. But I am sure this folder will be useful in a variety of crafting projects. This one is a bit larger than many of my other ones; just under 6"x6".

This embossing folder is a lovely floral design suitable for many different greeting cards. I used a Sizzix Big Shot with the embossing folder sandwiched between the standard base plate and one cutting plate and it went through the machine effortlessly and left a nice deep impression.

This is a fairly large square folder, but it is not what crafters would call 3d. The design is great for junk journal or card background texture, and it is as pictured in the outline. Had this been advertised as 2d, it would have earned at least 4 stars.

Such a pretty design! Embossing came out looking great with 24lb paper, using the back of a large spoon to leverage pressure onto the embossing plate. But I have to imagine that it might be difficult to emboss heavier weight paper, unless you can pass it through one of those manual-crank die cutting machines. It also is made of plastic, not metal, and that is apt to effect what weight of paper it can handle without damaging it. At the time, I didn't think to test it with thinner paper, but I'm guessing it probably would work quite excellent with vellum tracing paper. (Would have also been easier to photograph too.)
