Scotch Rubber Mastic Tape 2228 is a conformable self–fusing rubber electrical insulating and sealing tape that consists of an ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) backing coated with an aggressive, temperature–stable mastic adhesive. This tape is made 65 mils (1,65 mm) thick for quick application build–up. It is designed for electrical insulating and moisture sealing applications. It is a UL recognized component for applications up to 130C. It offers excellent resistance to moisture and ultraviolet exposure and is intended for both indoor and weather exposed outdoor applications. Scotch Rubber Mastic Tape 2228 should be applied in half–lapped layers until desired insulation build up is reached. Stretch the tape to 3/4 of its original width during application for good conformability and to obtain a moisture tight seal. Scotch Rubber Mastic Tape 2228 should be overwrapped for mechanical protection with two half–lapped layers of Scotch Super 33+TM Vinyl Electrical Tape.

Ridewrap chainstay armour is only a roll of rubber tape that costs twice as much as this product! I would highly recommend this product to protect your mountain bike frame and chain! Learned about this trick from a popular mountain biking channel on YouTube, I think GMBM? Anyways this product is perfect for protecting your mountain bike frame, whether carbon or aluminum!

I use this for all sorts of things: wrapping tool handles, bicycle chainstay silencer, padding between things that you don't want vibrating against each other. Sticky, grippy and lasts for a long time.

Used this to wrap wiring for a protective coating. This tape sticks and seals very well. It is pretty pricey though and do not go very far. It is a very good product without doubt. Will buy again if have a need for it.

Bought this to use on my mountain bikes for rock protection and chain guard slap. Works extremely well. Used in on both mountain bikes, and even my road bike. Its been holding up really well. I ride my bikes every day, so if it was gonna fail it would have shown its weakness by now. However so far, it all still looks great! Recommeded it to all my buddies. Much cheaper than buying the dedicated bike protectors!!

I almost always solder electrical connections and this stuff makes a waterproof seal and is easier to apply than shrink tubing. It seems to vulcanize to itself when wrapped and is rather hard to get off wiring when that is needed. That's OK, I want something that works well. I use it to also wrap some hose clamps for looks and to avoid chafing. Tons of uses so I carry it in my work truck and fun buggy. I just cut off a small strip, peel off the paper and stretch it before applying. EZ and effective.

Don’t settle for off brands. This tape is self sealing, and makes for moisture proof electrical splices. The trick is to stretch it applying and wrapping. You will feel it get very tacky as you are wrapping. Press down all the edges. It makes for a pretty permanent seal. I ‘ve been using this brand tape on all electrical installations in marine applications and never had a failure.

Got this excellent black tape for mtb frame protection. I highly recommend 2228, was easy to apply. I used one box (£20) and cut strips and fitted side by side. It is maluble to seal together. Covered underside of all the bike frame, to protect against stone chips. Used on down tube and chain stay. Not bothered about weight of tape. Might be a pain to get off, but I will be putting new on.

I had a problem with chain slap on my hard tail mountain bike. The bouncing bike chain was hitting the frame and chipping away the paint. On several occasions the chain bounced right off the sprocket. After doing some researching on chain tensioners and frame protectors, I ran across an article that talked about using this tape to protect the frame. Well, I tried it and it works pretty good. It was easy to install. Just clean the frame, cut a piece to length, and stick it on. I immediately noticed the lack of noise as the bouncing chain now hits this "padded" tape instead of the metal bike frame. Additionally, the tape "absorbs" some of the energy and the chain hasn't bounced off since. Cheap solution to common mountain bike issue.

After a friend told me about this stuff, I searched for it at my local hardware store and couldn't find it. I used it on my bicycles to protect the chain stays from chain slap, and it works great. The tape conforms to the contours of the stays, and works best when applied slightly warm. After using it for a year on my bikes it still looks pretty good and has held up better than most manufactured stay protectors I've used. The adhesive has held up great as well and I haven't had any issues with it falling off. I'm never going to wrap an old tube around my stays again!
