These chisels are made from one solid piece of forged steel so can stand up to extreme abuse. They can be struck on the ends with a hammer and sustain no damage. They are hardened at the cutting edge to 58-60 Rockwell and left moderately hardened at the ends to minimize the danger of flying steel when struck. The handles cant up a few degrees from the back of the chisel allowing use as slicks. The handles are dipped in PVC coating. The cutting edge is ground and then sharpened on a felt wheel and ready to use without any touch up. These chisels are made by hand in small batches so the grinding may not always be absolutely perfect. They may have small slopes on the bevels and sometimes are not exactly perpendicular in their edge grinding. However, they are absolutely wonderful workman's chisels especially useful in timber framing work because of their length and robustness. These are the go to chisels to have when you want a good chisel that might get damaged in use in outdoor woodworking or general rough environments. Come with tip guards.Made in France.

For starters the edge was not square and the back was not even close to flat. After lapping for hours there is still one corner of the edge that is not true to the back of the blade. The steel is soft, not tempered properly. I am cutting mortises in red oak and even with a rather steep front bevel the edge folds, chips, and rips under requiring frequent touchups. See attached pics for example.

Clean out dado in 2x6. Removed 6" of dipping from chisel.

As a woodworker and carpenter, this is very upsetting to receive a brand new chisel, clearly damaged during manufacturing. The protector for the blade was put on over the imperfections. These may seem like small, insignificant, dings in the blade, but when trying for a smooth cut through wood, you can't have these at all. I hope the replacement I ordered is in better condition.
