The timing chain synchronizes the crankshaft and the camshaft, make sure that the valves open and close at the right time. Timing chain and timing gears are held in place with a timing chain tensioner. With this tensioner, the chain won’t skip or jump. It gets held in place, so the crankshaft and camshaft gears can turn at the appropriate speeds.

As of now, most 5.4L Triton engines are more than a decade old, timing chain and timing chain related parts tend to fails on such an old engine. Make sure you changed your wear out timing chain kit on your 5.4L Triton Ford F-150, F-250, F-350, Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, Mark LT, before further damage can occur.

5.4L Triton Timing Chain Failure Symptoms

Rattling will be one of the most common symptoms of the 5.4 timing chain or tensioner failing. This is due to slack in the timing chain.

Other symptoms may show themselves, too. Like noisy timing chains or timing related ECU fault codes, or you can simply know your timing system is failing through decreased fuel economy and decreased power.

If you notice any of the symptoms above, don't hesitate, change your 5.4 Triton timing chain kit immediately to avoid further damage.

Got it back together yesterday fired it up this morning and it runs like a top with a new parts. I do recommend that you put 2 quarts of oil in a container that you can dip the sprockets with the cam phasers in it prior to installation. Let those parts get gorged with that oil. I also use some engine oil stabilizer, very thick, on the guides in the chain before putting it back together. It works, wonderfully, and I don’t expect any issues. Let me also say that you will not need any special tools to hold the cams even though many videos you see they are using special tools. You can just use a breaker bar and a socket on the cam bolt and have someone hold that still, and then you can release it to a neutral position slowly on each sprocket. The timing chain has colored links that you will line up with the sprockets both upper and the bottom sprocket. You cannot get this system a tooth off. It is impossible if you have a color links in the right place before you put the cover back on. You can do this!

Less that 50 miles and the guides broke. Total crap. I’m so irritated. This isn’t an easy job to do. In fact it was a total pain in the A**. And now i have to take it all back apart to replace some cheap plastic so the chain doesn’t destroy itself!

I installed this kit in my 5.4 in June 2020 at 80,000mls. The truck now has over 130,000mls and runs great.Prior to purchase I read folks had had trouble with the phasers in this kit, my gut feeling for these failures was the phasers were being installed dry. I soaked the phasers from this kit in a bucket of engine oil over night before I installed them and have had no trouble with them.

2005 Ford F-250 5.4L, truck has plow. I was a little worried about not buying an OEM replacement and due to the amount of work involved was very hesitant. But this truck is not my daily driver and I was also dropping money on coil packs, plugs and two special tools to remove the plugs (yes there is more than one way to break them). I don’t expect to get another hundred thousand miles out of these but who knows.Phasers looked well made and were packaged well. Tensioners looked solid with better gaskets than the original. (passenger side on old set was blown out at the gasket). I didn’t use the chain gear at the bottom. It didn’t seem good quality and there were metal shavings all over from the manufacturing process. These could have been scraped off but this led me to not trust whoever made them. I am sure it was fine but the old one was fine so I re-used it. I didn’t have any slippage before, just got on this repair before it got too bad.Got it all done about a week ago and truck has been running great. No codes and no misfires. Restored my lost power and hesitation. Probably have put about 100 miles on it. Will update after I get some more miles on it and after plowing. Also recommended if your doing this, change plugs and coil packs as well. Your motor will run great. Now on to the dreaded exhaust manifolds!
