An OEM recoil starter was $40-$50, decided to go for a $16 non OEM part for lawn mower which has already been used 8-9 seasons. Could see from OEM pictures on the internet that this part was likely to fit my Craftsman model 247.370371 mower. Note - mower model/serial numbers and engine model/serial numbers are on separate stickers. This recoil starter came with bolts, washers, nuts, and a spare starter rope. Photo shows new starter mounted on old mower with four shiny bolts. Worked on first pull! To replace starter put mower on piece of cardboard in case gas or oil spills. For my mower: (1) Unattach pull rope from mower handle (2) Remove plastic cowl (two screws hold it) and thread old starter handle through the cowl (3) Hold new replacement starter over existing starter and eyeball if it will fit. (4) Old starter is (often) held in place by four rivets; select appropriate size drill bit and drill four rivets out. This was easy. (5) Remove bolts holding frame holding gas tank and oil dipstick tube, two bolts in the front and one underneath in the back on my mower (6) Use needle nose pliers and Phillips screwdriver to put tiny bolt in first hole of new starter and old frame to which it mounts. Reach underneath and put nut on bolt. Tighten. Repeat for other three bolts/nuts. (7) put three bolts removed in step 5 back in place. (8) Thread new pull handle through cowl (9) Reattach cowl. (10) Thread starter rope back through handle. Hope I didn’t forget anything.

The only issue was the spark plug was the wrong size but everything else was perfect! Easy to install!

Most small engine recoils come riveted to the tin piece requiring the robots to be drilled out before a replacement recoil can be mounted. I expected this but I also expected the replacement to come with bolts and nuts. This one did not. Recoil seems to work fine. This means a trip to the parts store and more lost time.

Drilled out the rivets from my 1998 toro lawn mower and used the included screws. Easy install and a perfect fit.

Hardest part was removing the old recoil off of the old housing. Had to grind off rivets. Not a big deal with a grinder.
