Pestle is fairly small in diameter and less massive than one can imagine from the website photo. It would be more than adequate for grinding small quantities of dry spices, but inadequate for pesto, moles, salsa cruda, etc.

Just the right size and weight for arthritic wrists hands. Using same big mortar, with new just right weight pestle. Good rough head finish to grind just about anything. Happy cooking!
