Transfer Case Shift Motor to transfer power from the transmission to all four wheels
The 4WD transfer case is attached to your vehicle transmission and makes it possible that your vehicle easily changes mode between rear-wheel drive and four wheel drive, 4x4. The transfer case consists of a series of gears and chains and when switched over allows power to be transferred to the front wheels and rear wheels at the same time.
The 4WD Transfer Case Shift Encoder motor is the part that turns the gear inside the transfer case, allowing your vehicle to be switched into 4x4 mode. The Shift Encoder Motor is located on the outside of the transfer case and is secured to the transfer case with 3 bolts. If your vehicle does not turn into and out of 4 wheel drive then faulty transfer case motor will be the main reason for this.

Four-wheel drive (4WD) is a vehicle system that powers the front and rear wheel axles at the same speed to help gain traction.
4WD improves traction in dangerous driving conditions, such as snow, ice, rocks, and other scenarios that can make control difficult. By engaging both sets of wheels, traction and control improves. Additional weight contributes to better grip on the road
4WD vehicles work best when they are regularly used and maintained according to manufacturer recommendations. If you don’t use the 4WD system for extended periods of time, the seals can dry out. It’s best to keep the system lubricated by activating it at least once every few months.
Only use 4WD when you need it to save as much gas and money as possible. Driving 4WD on mild, dry conditions can do damage to your front axles, differential gears, and other parts. Always use 2WD on dry pavement.
If you get stuck, switch to 4WD and slowly depress the gas pedal to get yourself out. If the wheels start spinning, stop before you dig yourself a deeper hole.

What are the symptoms of a bad transfer case motor
The transfer case is designed to last the vehicle’s lifespan, but Just like any other mechanical part/component, when the transfer case motor fails, it will show some symptoms to notify the driver that there might be a problem with some component of system. Mentioned below are some common points you will notice if your transfer case motor fails.
- Difficult to stay in four-wheel drive (4WD): One of the common problems you’ll notice when the transfer case fails is difficulty staying in 4WD. But it can also be an issue due to some other part of this system as well.
- (4WD) not engaging or disengaging: There are many reasons for 4WD to be disengaging or not engaging. The root cause ranges from electrical faults in the control system to defective shift mechanisms. The transfer case may have an internal problem.
- Embarrassing noise: A common sign of a problem on the vehicle is a strange noise that isn’t present before. Awkward and annoying noise can be bothersome, and it may indicate issues around the corner.
- Gear shifting Problems: Another sign of a bad transfer case is gear shifting issues between gear ranges. However, the main cause can be a damaged linkage or low fluid level. When having problems with gear shifting, before assuming you have an issue, ensure you are operating as per directions in owner's booklet. For example, before shifting to 4L, you need to stop the truck and place the transmission in neutral. Otherwise, you’ll hear a growling or grinding noise when engaging the gears.
- Illuminating four-wheel drive warning light: Some vehicles are equipped with ‘4WD service required message’ (or similar message) that will come on the dashboard when there’s an issue in the system. In contrast, other vehicles will blink continuously to indicate a problem within the system.
