A wood tool handle will eventually need to be replaced. A little fitting and adding the wedge gave me back a good old hammer. The repair took all of fifteen minutes. And doing it myself is satisfying.

Took a chance, that I regret, that these handles were for oval eye hammer heads (e.g., ball peen hammers), but they're not, they're for rectangular eye heads (e.g., claw hammers). I shouldn't have bought it without better description and actual eye dimensions. Also, grain of wood is oriented 90 degrees from the way it should be; hammer handles (like wooden baseball bats) should have annual growth rings parallel to the arc of a swing, and the wood grain of my handle will result in handle failure much sooner than if it were properly made. The two stars were for the order being correctly fulfilled and the handle being the correct length. About everything else was below expected. The handle was splintery and rough. Despite my best efforts to sand with 220 and 320 sandpaper, The wood continues to have areas that will not remain smooth.
