How to Test a Throttle Position Sensor

  • 1.Use a standard ohmmeter to test a switch and combination type throttle position sensor and a voltmeter to test a throttle position sensor that uses a potentiometer.
  • 2.Check the resistance in various accelerator pedal positions, record the resistance
  • 3.Compare against values listed as acceptable in a quality car repair manuals to determine whether or not the sensor needs to be replaced.

Is It Worth The Repair?

Some issues are worth fixing while others aren’t. In the case of a bad TPS if your car is relatively new with low miles then it has a long road ahead of it and maybe it is worth your while. Now if your vehicle has existing damages, high mileage, and now mechanical issues then it's best to sell that AS IS to avoid throwing away your hard-earned cash into that money pit.

DATE: 2023-07-08PART: HSTPSsyhh-753-NEW X002ZVF115Replaced the old TPS sensor on a 2000 honda civic lx with a D16Y7 engine. The old sensor was reading out 9.6-10% throttle when idling with a slack throttle cable, causing the engine to bog down with AC and fans on. Would occasionally dip below 500 RPM line on the tach. After removing the throttle body and grinding out the heads of the bolts I put the new TPS in with the socket head cap screws and a bit of anti-seize. Fit up just fine and had enough wiggle in the slots to adjust it too 3.1-3.5% haven't checked the voltage drop across it as the OBD2 sensor values was enough to adjust it and get it running for now.The build quality of the sensor body itself is fine, it's not as nice as the OEM denso one, and it doesn't have the little metal inserts in the plastic molding slots. I think these are basically just a carbon resistive potentiometer on both the oem and the replacement so I expect to eventually wear out the lower section of the sensor again as it rubs against it.I'll update this review as time passes.

You get what you pay for. Never worked and it took more than 1 month to figure out what was wrong with the car until I found out it was the sensor. Would not recommend this. If you want something that works spend more money on a good product.
