Perfect for my small Lathe replacement variable controller. It is 1/4hp motor AC and this did the job providing sufficient current when voltage was turned down.

This motor speed controller is simple and easy to use, providing stable performance. It features a digital display that shows the output voltage, and the speed knob allows for precise control of the speed as a percentage of the maximum speed. I use this motor speed controller for adjusting the speed of my angle grinder, and it significantly simplifies my work.

As an AC speed controller, this device functions. In my limited experience, it is useful for about half of the dial range since most AC devices won't function below 60V and the dial response feels pretty non-linear. The construction is all plastic and it feels lightweight and fragile. It is difficult to plug into the control box for some reason (maybe it is some sort of safety device) and it takes a lot of effort to plug and unplug the controlled device into this controller. For home use in your basement or shop, this will probably work fine but the housing is not robust enough for industrial or professional usage. The case will break pretty easily, I fear. I have not used it for very long so I cannot yet comment on durability. It worked out of the box and continues to do so.

This speed controller will help you utilize and control tools or equipment to safely meet your needs. I use one on the router motor on my router table to manage and slow the RPM's down in order to safely use larger diameter router bits, as high router RPMs with a large diameter bit is a dangerous disaster about to happen. A large diameter bit "will" come flying out of that router if not slowed down. Speed controls are not recommended for use with soft start motors as the soft start electronics ramps up the voltage slowly to give you that easy start instead of the big jerk when you go full throttle all at once. The housing on this unit is plastic and I like the voltage readout so can repeat voltage settings without guessing.

It is probably advisable to take all of the published ratings for this device with a big grain of salt. It is rated for 9A with a maximum current of 15A, but then goes on to say it can support a maximum resistive load of 4000 watts, which is not possible. If you at least believe the current ratings, it is probably reasonable to expect that this should be able to support a 9A appliance with intermittent loads up to 15A, something like an intermittent-duty router that has a low running current but can surge during heavy cuts. This control has the general form factor of a similar product offered by the famous tool import chain. There are several differences however. This control has a voltage display and a somewhat fragile-feeling rocker switch that is also assumed to be a resettable circuit breaker. And unlike the other brand this control actually has an output that goes all the way down to zero with the control, where the other brand goes to a minimum speed that is set by an internal trim pot that you have to fiddle with to lower the minimum output voltage. The current rating for this control is 9A where the competitor is 8A. This one is also costs about $11 more.During test this control seems to work but a couple odd behaviors were noticed. First the voltage display shows line voltage no matter where the knob is set until such time that a load is applied, and then it drops to what is presumably the voltage going to the load. This is not a problem but just a caution in case you are wondering if something is wrong with your control.Unfortunately, at least on the control that I received, the voltage scale and the knob behavior is very non-linear and poorly calibrated. Under load the voltage display is at zero volts until the knob is turned all the way up to about 65%, and then it begins showing a voltage and the tool begins to run. So the entire range of tool speed occurs over the last 35% of the knob range. Something would appear to be not quite right with the design or at least the calibration of my control. Finally, if you are going to go cheap and make a product with a power cord that is only 32" long, why not go all the way to save yourself a few more cents and just put a 6" stub cord on the control. With a 32" cord you are virtually guaranteeing an extension cord will be needed to put the control near the tool and not have it hanging right near the outlet some distance away from where you are working. In my opinion ridiculously short power cords result in instant downrating of a product right out of the box and before I even try it.This could have been better, so in my case I'll stick with the other brand.

This worked on one of my smaller grinders that I wanted to make it variable speed. It was originally a variable speed small grinder buffer but the control went out. I used this to control the speed after bypassing the old control potentiometer. I was hoping to be able to use it on a larger bench sander that has a single phase motor, where I wanted to slow down the speed a bit. However, it did not work on that motor. Apparently there are some motors that it will not work on and others do. I included pictures of the instructions and they have a list of motors that it will not work with as well as what it does work with. They do say it does NOT work with single phase motors or domestic water pumps or smart rice cooker or LED lamp or Micro fan or Micro-wave oven in the instructions supplied. Not sure why anyone would want to try it for a micro-wave oven or rice cooker, but just letting you know it is NOT for that either.I did try it with a belt sander and it did control the speed of that. Interesting.
