On receiving this item, I checked out the device with my Multi-Meter. As seen in the photo, the device has a 3-prong non-polarized power supply plug, and a 3 prong polarized power outlet. With a polarized power outlet, the hot wire should be on the short height prong, and the Neutral should be on the tall prong of the receptacle. This device is wired backwards, and is therefore unsafe, and could cause electrocution. It could not pass CSA, UL, NEC, or any other electrical safety authority inspection or certification.DO NOT BUY !

This little unit works pretty well for adjusting the speed on the over head fan. It is a little noisy with the buzzing sound but it controls voltage so the motor struggles to get started but once the desire speed is reached to good.
