When choosing the length of the handlebar stem, road bike stems are longer than mountain bike stems. Faster mountain bikes are suitable for shorter stem lengths, generally 50-80mm; Slower racing bikes are suitable for shorter stem lengths. Longer, generally 80mm or more (increases with frame size, generally 130mm or longer); the above data is for reference and you can make a selection based on the actual situation.

This Alfa Pasca carbon fiber bicycle stem will go on my new bike, to replace the capable but heavier aluminum stem. The stem will sit on top of the fork, and be anchored to it. When a handlebar is anchored as well, the stem links handlebar to front wheel steering. The item itself was complete when delivered, well packed, and the exterior matte surface well finished. The price was very attractive. I did not "mike" the item, but the bolt patterns are square and the pinch bolt socket head screw fittings are firmly in place, aligned, and fitted with decent M5 socket head screws. I'm giving the stem 3 stars instead of 5 for the rough surface in the 28.6 fork bore or channel where the fork sits when anchored. Just rubbing my finger in that bore channel showed a linear bulge, perhaps 1.5 mm high and 2.5 mm long (read "small but detectable"). I used some abrasive strip/sandpaper, 120 grit, to very gently abrade the surface of the bulge until the entire bore was smooth. I made an extra effort not to enlarge the entire bore, but only to remove the bulge. The roughness of bulge could gouge or weaken whatever it's locked down on; as well, the bulge under pressure might crack at a weakened point. Best to clean up the bore and keep it at its spec. The other, larger channel includes the aluminum cap that mounts over the handlebar and clamps the bar to the stem. This channel was smooth and clean.Another concern was the finish on the edges of the pinch fork channel. These narrow surfaces face each other and are drawn close to each other when the two mount screws are tightened. On the stem I received, those surfaces were slightly rough and uneven. A few minutes work with a nail file smoothed them out. Both channels now are at spec: 28.6 mm for the fork channel, and 31.8 mm for the handlebar channel/clamp.The Alfa Pasca stem certainly looks nice. The matte surface on mine is smooth, even, clean, unmarred and symmetrical.I do have a concern about quality control on this stem. The Alfa Pasca handlebar I purchased was essentially flawless. Not so with this stem. The rough fork channel should have been caught and corrected before shipping. It wasn't.Nevertheless, I'm keeping mine and replacing the heavier aluminum piece.
