The Amprobe 15XP-B digital multimeter with built-in non-contact voltage detector is an average-sensing, auto- or manual-ranging meter for measuring current, voltage, and resistance, and for reporting logic states in electrical testing applications. The meter comes with a set of detachable test leads that measure alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) to 2 amp, AC voltage to 750 volts (V), DC voltage to 1,000V, and resistance to 2,000 megaohms. The meter's non-contact voltage detector senses AC voltage without making contact with the circuit. The logic test reports the logic state of a transistor-to-transistor (TTL) digital circuit in electronics. An audible continuity sensor confirms that the circuit conducts electricity, and a diode test detects whether the circuit's diodes work properly. The hold function keeps a reading on the display, even after the meter is disconnected. An auto power-off mode turns off the unit after 10 minutes of non-use to conserve battery life, and a low-battery indicator signals when the meter's batteries need to be replaced.
This average sensing, or average responding, meter provides accurate readings when measuring linear loads, such as standard induction motors and incandescent lights, where the current or voltage has a sinusoidal waveform. Two ranging modes (auto or manual) offer a range of operator control when taking readings. When turned on, the meter is in auto-ranging mode and automatically selects the correct operating range for the property being measured. It can be switched to manual-ranging mode, which allows the operator to choose the appropriate operating range. The meter has a 2,000-count resolution, meaning it can display up to 1,999 units (3-1/2 digits) before the operating range needs to be changed. It meets International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 61010 and is certified for category I installations up to 1,000V (which covers protected electrical equipment such as small household appliances), category II installations up to 600V (which covers large household appliances and devices connected to a fixed power supply, such as refrigerators and air conditioners), and category III installations up to 300V (which covers items used with enclosed building circuit installations, such as service panel parts, branch circuits, and fixed installations that are connected directly to a building's AC power supply). The meter comes with a magnetic strap that can be used to hang the meter on metal doors or fixtures.

Multimeters are electrical test meters that measure multiple properties of an electrical circuit, such as current, voltage, resistance, capacitance, and continuity. Available in handheld or benchtop models, multimeters diagnose electrical problems in electrical equipment, wiring, and power supplies. A variety of probes, clamps, and leads can be used to connect the meter to a circuit or device. Multimeters display information either in analog or digital form. The meter works well and has a few unexpected features that are nice like the magnetic strap to hang it on a cabinet and the holsters on the back of the case for stowing the test leads.

small and robust with easy to select ranges. non-contact tester proved handier than expected.I changed the wires and probes (because I had some better ones) but everything else is good to go

I like this multimeter. It suits my purposes fine and works great. No, it's not a Fluke. I have absolutely no need for a 300 dollar meter.However, for a normal person this is all the meter you would ever need (I of course make assumptions) hahaha. Anyway, if it broke or I dropped it down a well, I would buy another.

After spending about a day an a half pouring over reviews for multi-meters at Amazon and elsewhere, my son lent me his multi-meter from work for the weekend; a tester which his company provides to each commercial printer mobile repair-person: a seemingly rugged, and well built tester; and I know his company treasures the employees.I was thrilled with it, and so I bought one here on Amazon.The magnet on a 3-4 inch strap on top of the unit let me hang it from a vertical 1-1/2 inch painted iron pipe-- so I can say that it is very effective for hands-free testing when something iron is around.The probes can be snapped on back for storage.The top of the unit functions as a non-contact voltage detector which sounds through plaster walls, and gets louder as I get closer to the source.By unscrewing the caps off of the probes, they convert from having about 1/8 inch exposed metal tip, to about an 1-1/2 slender metal probe tips; tips designed to accept screw-on alligator clips which I bought as an accessory. (Note: I could not find the alligator clips alone, and so I spent the twenty. They come with a set of test lead wires identical to the ones that came with the probe. I can only assume that when I eventually give the multi-meter to one of my grandkids, she (or he) will have 'two' sets of test leads that function like-new.)I think Amprobe® is owned by Fluke®?The tester came with a printed manual dated 2013. I wanted to give that printed manual to my son because he did not get a "Amprobe 15XP-B" user manual at work, and he is somewhat unfamiliar with its full operational capabilities, and how to access its various functions; as I am.Since my use of the Amprobe meter is for rewiring my 100-year old house, and I have the internet here, an online version would be just fine.After much ado, I did finally find the manual online at amprobe.com, but the support page link to it is miss-labeled as '5xp-a'. And although the online version is 2009, it appeared to be identical to the printed 2013 version that came with the meter, as far as the few pages I checked.I wanted to contact Amprobe about their website error, and when I clicked the link for their webmaster, the email address came up as the webmaster at fluke.com.If, as I now assume, the "Amprobe 15XP-B" is made by Fluke, then I am even more confident I made the right decision to buy it.

I'm currently in school for instrumentation and this is the meter the professor recommended. Works awesome. So much easier to use the the VOM or analog meters they made me use at first. My only complaint is that after a couple minutes of not being used the meter beeps and shuts off. Which can be annoying when working on something but it serves a purpose so not a bad idea.
