With the universal USB 2.0 interface, this bus-powered 5MPcamera is a go-anywhere imaging solution. Deriving power from the USB connection, MU series cameras can be used at home, in a lab, or in the field. The industry-standard C-mount design allows this camera to be connected directly to C-mount photo-ports, or used in conjunction with an array of lenses and adapters to mount to virtually any popular microscope line. With software available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, the MU series is a multi-platform imaging solution. The included Windows software offers image-development and measurement tools, as well as advanced compositing features such as image-stitching and extended-depth-of-focus. With the ability to calibrate scales at multiple magnifications, the software can be used for multi-level inspection. Independent preview and capture resolutions allow you to view high-speed video while simultaneously capturing high-definition images. For Mac and Linux, there is a lite version of the software which can capture video and still images, and includes limited processing features. Although it is not advertised as such, I find this camera operates well with low illumination. My new Dell travel laptop was basically useless with my older cameras (unbuffered). It does great with this camera. To get the highest frame rates you have reduce the exposure time. Thanks to the larger 2.2x2.2 micron pixels and whatever else they've done to improve this camera, e.g., I can run at half the exposure times as with my 3MP and 9MP cameras with crossed polarizers on my inverted scope and get all the transfer speed I need. And there's no price penalty for the improved performance. The only hitch was I needed to download the latest software. Finally, it not only performs well, it looks good..
