What Size of Violin Should I Buy?

Find your violin size by measuring from base of neck to mid-palm.

Use the sizing chart to choose the correct size from the arm measurement.

Follow these instructions for the most accurate size: First, with arm outstretched to the side, measure the player's arm from the base of neck to mid-palm. Check the size chart below for the right size of violin according to arm length measurement. Always choose the smaller size if the student is in-between sizes. A larger instrument will hinder the student’s ability to play properly. The deciding factor is if the student is able to, or very close to, playing the 4th finger. If they can reach this fingering the violin will be usable.

  1. Extend arm fully to the side and perpendicular to the body.
  2. Measure from the base of the neck to the middle of the palm.
  3. If you are between sizes, size down.

Please use the sizing chart below to assist you.

1/16 14"–15" arm length, usually 3–5 years age
1/10 15"–16" arm length, usually 3–5 years age
1/8 16"–18" arm length, usually 3–5 years age
1/4 18"–20" arm length, usually 4–7 years age
1/2 20"–22" arm length, usually 6–10 years age
3/4 22"–23" arm length, usually 9–11 years age
4/4 23" and up arm length, usually 12 years and up in age

I am so impressed! I received my violin last week and I’ve been playing on it every day since. The sound is incredible! Once I receive the violin all I had to do was tune it, but everything else was ready. The moment I open the box and saw this violin I was amazed by its beauty. Since I was buying a clearance violin, I expected to see some imperfections, but I honestly found none. Overall, I am extremely impressed with Kennedy violins! I would purchase from them in again in a heartbeat. Great product, and great service! Highly recommend!

Instrument arrived in a well packed sturdy box- everything was in perfect condition, right down to the rosin ( no breaks or cracks)! Violin is beautiful with a soft, satin-like finish and produces warm tone. The carrying case is also very nice as well as functional with plenty of room for my shoulder rest ( came with the instrument and is also really nice), music, instructional book, and other accessories. The extras such as the digital tuner, set of strings, cleaning cloth, rosin and exercise book are very helpful and handy to have. I would definitely recommend this Kennedy violin for both beginning and intermediate instrumentalists.

Our house burned down in a wildfire and my husband lost his violins. I wanted to buy him one for Christmas that wasn't going to be some cheap thing with lousy sound. I know nothing about violins myself. After a considerable amount of research and taking into consideration not only my budget but the fact he's just an ordinary self taught guy who loves fiddle music and not the first chair someplace I decided on this one and hoped for the best. This Kennedy Violins company sounded like exactly what I wanted. They claimed to be pretty well constructed and made in America. I read the reviews and a lot of the folks said to immediately change the strings to the top of the line ones. I bought more expensive strings to change to. When the violin came UPS, thank God for once, they actually opened our gate and laid it gently in the bushes. Usually they toss stuff over the fence and I was really worried the violin would be broken. The Kennedy people had packed the violin very well and it was in perfect condition. My son, who is a guitarist, checked it out and told me (and I could clearly see for myself) that it is beautiful. There was no need to change the strings as it came with the upgraded strings. The violin has not been played yet so I don't know the sound. The trouble with Amazon wanting reviews right away is that I buy gifts and it's too early. I will edit or upgrade this review after Christmas to tell you what he thinks but I have a strong feeling he is going to be very pleased. 12-30 Well my husband loves his new violin. Absolutely loves it and the sound is so strong and pure. Definitely better than the violins that burned up. I would definitely reccomend this company. UPDATE: My husband loves this violin and it sounds so good. Very happy with it.

Let's start with what wasn't perfect because, honestly, if you read these like I do, you're looking for that info. The rosin was a box of shattered fragments. I wrote to Kennedy and they sent a perfect rosin block replacement that was better than the one the violin kit was supposed to come with. Next, the bridge was not set at the right angle, our local pro shop was able to make the correction in just a couple of minutes at no charge. Last, the strings are a nice affordable set of D'Addario steel core strings, which, are not as pretty a sound as much more expensive strings, but do the job well enough, our student is just finishing his first year, so we'll let these strings stay on the violin til it's time for replacements. That's it for negatives! The voice of the violin is clear, bright, warm and beautiful, the body is blemish free and also very pretty, I would definitely recommend for any new serious student and would / will buy from Kennedy again.

First for the price I paid, this was an excellent piece of instrument. It certainly cannot be compared to super expensive violins, but it all comes down to cost and benefit. I purchased this violin as a backup for my son who is in 8th grade orchestra. He also takes private lessons on a weekly basis. Long story short, he knows his violin pretty well. He was quite impressed with the one I received originally and commented it has very good sound quality. The case, bow and other accessories came with the violin also seemed to be good quality. While inspecting the violin, I did notice a small section was not painted. I contacted the seller right away to express my concerns. Katie replied right away offering different options for me. I chose to get a new replacement. It was truly a hassle free process. The replacement violin was shipped to me quickly. Prepaid Return label was also included in then package. Katie from Kennedy Violin was super easy to work with showed professionalism and superior customer service. I am very happy with the purchase and more importantly their great service.
