Works okay on Polyethylene, works excellent on Polyurethane.Polyethylene, this more rigid style of packing foam is best cut using the wire attachment. Requires a good amount of patience and a gentle hand to use correctly. Keep in mind polyethylene leaves a lot of melted residue and smoke when cutting so use outside. All foam cutters of this style struggle with polyethylene and this one handles about as well as it could. DO NOT TURN THE DIAL PAST ITS RECCOMENDATION ON THE POWER BRICK. Those limits are meant to determine how how its able to get before self destructing. There are many reviews for this product that claim it "melted" but after having used it for several hours on many pieces of foam, it would only do that if you were to exceed its recommended voltage for that attachment. Even if the Polyethylene takes a while to cut on lower settings or it is difficult to cut through, do not exceed the recommended voltage.Polyurethane is a softer lighter foam, often used in camera cases. All the attachments provided cut through this foam like butter and make it extremely easy to get smooth clean cuts. There's some technique to learning how each part cuts each type of foam. There is no failsafe for ignoring directions, it will let you crank up the power and break it if you choose to. Other similar items you can buy simply have one fixed voltage, this one gives lots of versatility by being able to adjust it yourself.

It worked perfectly for what I needed it for. I did have to turn it down quite a bit more than what they suggested because it was really melting the foam I was cutting.

How to cut Polyethylene into a somewhat complex shapes? First impression of Alloa Hot Foam Cutter arriving in its cardboard box is quality consistent with low price, but what a solid performer! Distance from outlet to transformer (previous comment/reviews) is a tad short, but overall cord length allowed easy usage. Connections from power to the ergonomic handle, from handle to each tool felt solid and sturdy. Transformer dial and on-off switch on the handle seem substantial. Instruction is to wait 10 seconds-it essentially heats instantly. The handle remains cool even as the tools are already ready to cut (without showing obvious heat). Without clear-cut instruction regarding voltage dial, I chose the middle setting, and used three of four working heads: Loop, longer straight, and wire/bow cutter for different cuts. Wow! Sensation like slicing butter with a hot knife! Cut is so effortless, you need to be ready with a steady hand. I traced a curve with a pencil which made a nice score to follow free hand, and used a cardboard stencil clamped to the foam to reproduce an S-shape. The wire cutter did not interact with the cardboard while neatly slicing the project. I found the thin wire to be the most effective cutter when used with almost ZERO FORCE, letting the heat do the work. Excess plastic melted to the tools either burned off after cutting, or was removed cold with very light touch of box cutter blade, ready to work again. My wife cut some styrofoam with similar positive results. If I broke it tomorrow, it would have been worth every penny, and I would gladly buy another.

Having already owned one of these that bit the dust prematurely, I wanted to avoid the same pitfalls I already succumbed to. All of this variety of foam cutters look the same but not all are of the same quality. This one seems to be constructed of more durable components than my last one, to which, both of the “probes” that were with it broke and the power supply burned out. It is too early to tell about the longevity of the power supply but it is definitely built sturdier and has more accurate power adjustment, the “probes” are more solid and are considerably better than the other one I had owned. My assessment so far is that I would recommend this kit as a low cost, reliable tool.

To be fair, I knew I wasn't getting a product that would stand the test of time, but I did expect it to handle more than the 2 hours that I used it. The small foam cutter stopped heating after 2 minutes total. The longer cutter burned through its own plastic jacket after 1 1/2 hours. And to be clear, this was not 1 1/2 hours of continuous use. It was 30 minutes of run time per use. When it worked, it cut through Kaizen foam beautifully, was very responsive and simple.... it is just has near ZERO reliability. I would have contacted the company but there is no contact, leaving me this avenue only. Buy at your own risk. It is conceivable I received a faulty unit, but I will never know.

Perfectamente empacado. Fácil de usar. Muy buena calidad. Quizás sería mucho mejor si trajera un estuche rígido hecho a la medida. Estaría dispuesto a pagar por esa diferencia. Gran producto!

I used this on my first styrofoam carving project. I carved columns/archway, a snow man, giant ornaments. This worked wonders. All of the attachments allow you to accomplish the desired shapes of your project. The temperature control took a little time to get used to but once I saw how each attachment worked with the material it was easy to adapt. The connection between the different attachments and the wand feels secure and allows you to change them relatively soon after use as to not delay the flow of your work. The re-wiring of the bow can be a bit cumbersome and if not done very well causes quick breakage but it was my most utilized attachment. The only downside I felt was the ability to move around while using this tool. Since there is a control box between the tool and plug, it bears more weight and can cause a disconnect between the tool and the cord if allowed to hang. As I was creating large pieces (one over 8ft and the other around 6ft) I had to hold the control box in one hand and the tool in another which was inconvenient in cases that I need to use my second hand. Overall this was a great first buy and I would recommend it to others for smaller scale projects - only due to the cord situation.
