I got a good deal on the Argon 8M, so I feel obliged to write a review. I wanted another wavetable synth, and this one was right in my price range. It sounds really good. The V3 update is a nice upgrade. It improved upon the sound of the synth, and brought a bunch of new features and add-ons. Though there are some limitations, I am satisfied with it's overall capabilities. The V2 Reverb + is probably one of the best ambient reverb effects I've used. It's very shimmery and long tailed. The effects are good, and I might mention the ping-pong delay as one of my favorites too. The filters are another great aspect of this synth. It's so easy to morph from LP, BP, to HP filters and everything between. There are some really good notched filters that have some interesting options. There are only two oscillators, but it doesn't sound thin at all. There are two LFOs and three envelopes. The mod matrix has 8 slots. Somewhat limiting, but it is enough for most of the patches I make. There are some limitations with what can be modded. Once a parameter or effect is modded, it might not be possible to do another mod destination with the same effect or parameter. LFO 2 can't mod some destinations that LFO 1 can mod. There are some oscillator mods that don't require a matrix slot. They are algorithms that can be applied to the oscillator. The envelopes have algorithms for the curve. They cannot be fine tuned, which is another limitation. It's still great that these all features are packed into this synth. I don't want it to sound like it's not capable, because it really is a powerhouse. It can do ambient, walls of sound, dirty, gritty, distortion, classic riffs and stabs, lo-fi, and it still has that Modal flavor too.The UI is good. It is user friendly, but with many shift functions. There is, however, a shift lock. That should be the new standard for every synth. It's such a great feature. I didn't have to read much of the manual. Everything is laid out in a way that is easy to understand and easy to create an efficient workflow. This synth fit perfectly into my setup. It has at least one aspect in common with my other four synths. I have a Hydrasynth Explorer as my main synth. The Argon and the Hydra are both wavetable synths with similar features. It is not as deep as the Hydra, but the sound is still there. I have a MIcroFreak, and Modal made an oscillator type for that synth. Small world! My Minilogue XD has a joystick, and so does the Argon. They both have great effects! Finally, my MicroKorg has much in common with the Argon; especially, because of the oscillator mods. It's almost like it was meant to be.I really like this synth. I was glad to hear that Modal rebounded from some troubles that almost shut them down. They recently showcased the Carbon 8, which is said to be twice as powerful as the Cobalt and Argon. It will be interesting to see what kind of features they have. I have total confidence that it will be another great synth!

a 2 osc synth with wavetables and 8 voices.. while ergonomically pleasant in an ikea sort of way, the sound is nothing to write home about, although the key bed is (a fatar keybed as used by Access Virus, Dave Smith etc). The realty of my ownership is that after the first few days of playing, the synth actually simply did not offer anything special..it sounds ok, but would probably not be as overall useful as its cousin, the Cobalt 8...Modal clearly put lots of money and effort into the aesthetics, (the metal chassis, keybed etc) however this disguises the cheap internals. Most notably of which is that whomever designed the power supply, decided to cheap out by not having a standard IEC connector and designed instead an unprotected power circuit, as in no fuses nor circuit protection. A very large range of power adapter plugs can fit this generic socket so be warned.Customer service from this UK based company is, in my experience, largely non existent so bear this in mind if you purchase.

I picked one of these up about a month ago. It is a great machine. So much to play around with as far as features go and so many sound possibilities. Also the effects give it such a full rich sound. Really impressed for the price of the unit! Also very solidly built metal case and good keybed.
