It is made from durable, dark brown ABS plastic and features the smart 'ivory detail' which is seen on many traditional school recorders. The recorder has a curved windway and a concave bell which together allow for a rich, mellifluous sound. The response is better than cheaper models and hence the player can be much more expressive. The body can be separated into 3 parts for easy maintenance and will fit neatly into the accompanying 'leatherette' bag. It is supplied with a fingering chart, cleaning rod and joint grease.

This is a very nice ABS alto recorder with great tone at a great price! I also have the Aulos 709 BW Haka alto recorder which is also great.

I have an expensive wooden flute, and it is actually too powerful (almost piercing) at the high end, maybe what you need when playing in a large group or with an orchestra, but it hurt my ears. This model also has a bright high end, but not as piercing, I can play this with others who have the $800 recorders, and it blends right in.

the 509B is from Aulos Symphony series, It is capable of Very High quality sounds. To get the best sounds out of ANY Recorder, I start by, Prepping before playing the Recorder, Dry hands Leak air big time, and leaky hand make poor sounds. I use Coconut oil or Olive oil, i put a little on the hands rub it in, a little on the lips, any residual rub the exterior of the instrument. Warm the instrument up to Body temperature, this reduces condensation in the headpiece of the instrument. The Aulos Symphony 509B is a Very Nice sounding Instrument, that is Very capable of Bending notes on every hole easily. This recorder for a Resin recorder is Great, as it is very expressive, and provide Quality sound all Notes easy to obtain, Playability is excellent. This and the Haka Alto are both Very good. so is the Yamaha 312 and 314 altos. Those 4 are my favorite Altos, and they are all worth having, and i do, because they are Great performers. and just a little different from each other.

I play baroque recorder in both C and F (this is an F recorder) and baroque traverso with a consort, as a soloist, and with basso continuo. I primarily play baroque music. I have the entire Aulos 500 line of recorders, and they all play beautifully.I use this model both for practice and performance. It is durable and easy to wash (soap and water is fine). It plays in tune and it is responsive and agile across its range. It responds quickly to octaves. It is also has a curved airway, making it more responsive to changes in breath pressure, embouchure, and angle. This instrument is in modern (A=440) tuning, which makes it easy to play with other modern instruments. If you are looking for historic tuning (A=415), you will want a different recorder.Cons? This series has a sweet tone, but it is not going to sound like an expensive wooden recorder. In my opinion, it sounds like a plastic recorder, but a very good one. Because it is plastic, condensation will accumulate quickly as it is played; in a cool space, I sometimes have to clear the airway quickly before I've finished more than a page or two of music. If you are interested in playing baroque music, especially written specifically for the recorder (or block flute), the treble is the way to go. Most of the music written for recorder in that time period had the treble recorder in mind.
