The Perfect Microphone for Compact Cinema Cameras

SGM-250CX Professional Compact Cine Mic

Part of Azden's Ni-Go-Maru (250) Series of Microphones, the SGM-250CX is a short length, condenser shotgun microphone that is ideal for mounting on compact digital cinema cameras, as well as DSLR and mirrorless cameras equipped with XLR adapters. Measuring at a mere 6 inches in length, the SGM-250CX can easily stay out of the way. Integrated in the microphone’s design is a hardwired, 13-inch XLR cable for convenient connection to camera microphone inputs. The microphone’s highly sensitive, condenser element is powered by standard 48 V phantom power, which most XLR microphone inputs can provide.

The SGM-250CX includes Azden’s SMH-X shock mount which mounts to standard size camera shoe slots, as well as ¼”- 20 threaded mounts and tripods. Also included are diameter expander sheets for universal compatibility with ring-clamp style microphone mounts.

I have a couple much nicer Sennheisers for my studio setup, and I have some tiny Sony and Rode mics for portability. I wanted a mini shotgun for my desk, to replace my "podcast" mic so it would be always on and out of the way.I paired this with a Behringer USB preamp with phantom power, put it on a magic arm, slapped that on a monitor pole on my desk, and boom, perfect placement for all my zoom calls, streaming, and occasional mild voiceover work. It's not super directional compared to my longer Shure MKE600s but it's a lot more directional than the old podcast-style dynamic mics I had with their cardioid pickup patterns. Which is nice, when anything happens outside of my little 'bubble' in the office. That also means placement is critical!

I bought three of these mics. I plug them into my cameras for decent audio recorded on each camera. Note, I have not used these as my main mic. I wanted a simple mic which uses phantom power so I don't have mess with batteries. There are no switches on this mic. It plugs into an XLR female port. This mic requires phantom power and does not require batteries.Update: I am editing some footage shot with an ENG handheld camera with a connected Sennheiser shotgun mic. I used two of the Azden mics in the room to pick audio from the crowd. It worked fine. The shotgun on the ENG camera provided the best sound being closest to the action. DaVinci Resolve was able to sync the sound from the Sennheiser recorded in the video with the audio from the two Azden mics connected to an audio recorder.
