Eye collapses and can twist around the thread for no real add to thread diameter. However, unless you pre-drill holes in the fabric, wider than the needle, it won't go through. Touching material with any force bends the needle without moving fabric, much less making a hole in it. Winding it around a real needle works for the pre-drilled hole is still wider than your thread, as pulling it through a slightly smaller hole will rip the eye open, breaking it's use.
