Geniale Arschrakete!

The harness for this bag is really annoying if you want to remove it between bikepacking trips (and its ugly to leave on when you arent using it). I wish it were some kind of quick release instead of allen bolts. Otherwise I like it.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE:After emailing Blackburn directly and providing photos of the velcro straps, Blackburn offered a refund upon return of the seat pack. So I returned it and a refund check arrived 6-8 weeks later. Still can't recommend this particular seat pack but appreciate Blackburn's customer service.AND UPON FURTHER REVIEW:As noted below, the sticky velcro does not extend far enough on the straps. But the real problem is that the sticky part wears off ... after six months. Therefore, I cannot recommend this seat pack.REVISED REVIEW:After using this seat pack for several months, I switched to a rear rack and panniers because of a design flaw in the Blackburn Seat Pack. The straps wrap around the sides do not have enough of the sticky velcro section to tighten the straps sufficiently. If you don't stuff the pack, you will have to tighten the straps to the point where the velcro doesn't stick.Original ReviewWatch the video first:... says the biker who tried to install the bracket and bag without watching the installation video first. After learning that my cross bike does not have mounts for a rack contrary to what I was told, I started looking for a seat pack for bike commuting.Since my bike is 47 cm, most large packs hang too low and risk bouncing off the rear wheel going over bumps. And unless the straps are tightened considerably, the pack will likely sway laterally.Enter the Blackburn Outpost Elite Universal Seat Pack and Dry Bike Bag.This set up comes with a harness that attaches with two wide velcro straps to the seat post as well as a bracket that sits over the saddle rails and attaches to the harness with two mounting screws.Like many bike accessory installations, this one is also a little tricky but manageable, especially if you have a bike stand. If not, just lean your bike up against a wall.Pros:• If you have a small cross or gravel bike, this set up will likely allow the required clearance over your rear wheel. On my 47 cm bike, it provides a minimum of 1.5" of clearance.• When the straps are tightened down, the bag is fairly immobile. Very little movement, if any.• The dry bag has an air release valve: loosen it to let out the air and then tighten it after air is released.• Easy in, easy out. When you arrive at your destination, unbuckle the straps on the sides and loosen a couple of velcro straps to remove the dry bag.• More than adequate capacity. My bag is carrying a pair of size 5 swim fins, small swimming hand paddles, swim cap, bath towel, and my main reason for getting a rear seat pack: the very heavy Abus U lock. The bag could probably accommodate a few more items but getting the U lock off my back (previously carried in a bike backpack) was the main reason to get a seat pack. Let the bike carry your gear instead of carrying it in a backpack on your back.•The pack is also adequate for carrying a few light groceries. On a recent trip, my pack carried a small bag of bagels, cream cheese, two large tomatoes, a small container of parmesan cheese, a container of Tofu, and my very heavy U lock.• Includes a daisy chain section to fasten a rear light.Cons:• Price - this is one of the more expensive rear seat packs on the market. Maybe the most expensive.• The straps that fasten to the seat post aren't very long (if your bike has a thicker seat post). The first time I set the pack up on the bike, it was a little low and the bottom strap was too short to fit around the collar of the seat post. With a small adjustment to the position of the bracket over the saddle rails, both straps fit nicely around the seat post with the bottom strap sitting just above the seat post collar. Still could be longer but at least both are fastened securely now.•This pack works best when it is stuffed. If it is not stuffed, the rough section of the velcro straps on the sides of the bag won’t stick to the soft part when tightened because the rough section is only 2.5”. A bungee cord around the harness and pack helps to keep it stabilized.•The strap on one side of the pack is easier to tighten than the other side due to how the strap is routed through the buckles. Requires a little fidgeting to get it just right.•In order to prevent the pack from swaying, the straps need to be tightened considerably. However, on the cardboard hangtag is a cautionary note against over tightening the straps.•The straps tend to fray. I’m constantly cutting threads off of the straps.•You have to buy the pack to get further details such as the fine print: “Do not use with carbon seat rails.” This information was not included in the information I read on various websites. Nor was the small print on the instruction sheet that states: “Not for use with carbon seat posts.”• After you arrive at your destination and remove your bag, the harness will remain on your bike. When I'm in the pool swimming, I often wonder if my bike will still be locked up at the bike rack when I'm finished. And now I'll be wondering if the harness will still be on my bike when I finish swimming.Overall, I am extremely happy with this bag. The Blackburn Outpost Elite Universal Seat Pack and Dry Bike Bag appears to be the best (perhaps only) option for use on a small bike without a rack mounting option.

I wanted this seat bag setup to work, but it really failed at several things... quality control and design issues...First, the bracket didn't fit my seat rails. The rails need to be more "upright" and my $250 Selle SMP Stratos rails are flared out to about 45°. So I tried my wife's Selle Italia Diva and was able to get the bracket mounted.Second, I found that the screw hole spacing on the various components were all different. The widths varied from 42.4mm to 45.1mm so getting the screws in was not as easy as it should be.Third, the width of the harness at the narrow end is 78.1mm while the dry bag at its narrowest is 117.0mm, so there's no way that will fit. After jamming in some down vests and hoodies I wasn't able to get it into the harness more than a couple inches. If I jammed the bag into the harness first, the whole bike/harness would move all over the place as I was trying to jam things in, so the dry bag could never reach its capacity or allow burping out the air easily. You should definitely be able to stuff your clothes into the dry bag and then jam it in the harness.Fourth, they used a different buckle setup on each side for cinching the load. One you can just grab and cinch but the other one uses a small tensioner that does not allow cinching.Fifth, when not using a dropper the seatpost cinch straps are too short to fully wrap around to meet the Velco on the bag, and using a Wolf Tooth Valais on my dropper the strap wouldn't even reach to touch any Velcro, so they were essentially useless at that point. With the strap not able to be fully secured it sticks out and hits your leg while pedaling... another major fail.Sixth, the entire harness assembly cannot be removed easily in between uses. If you just remove the dry bag you're left with a harness assembly and straps just flopping around behind the seat.Seventh, forget about using a dropper, which is why I got this bag. To install the setup for dropper use you have to remove the seat each time, which is extremely inconvenient. Good luck getting the seat aligned perfectly after that every time.Positives: Once the seat bag assembly was properly installed it seemed to be very stable. And the materials seem to be very durable. However, In my opinion there are too few positives and way too many negatives to recommend this seat bag. NOT RECOMMENDED. YMMV

Very poor design, virtually impossible to mount on the seat rails. To clamp the holster section on to the seat post one needs to juggle the U shaped bracket, the holster, and two mounting plates. All while trying to hold the bracket in place under the seat rails with one hand and trying to start the Allen head screws threaded through three loose objects. I managed to get the screws started only by discarding one of the plates (Plate #2) the whole thing would not fit correctly because the seat on my wife's bike has an extended seat clamp and the front of the bag which is supposed to attach to the seat post with two velcro straps was still 1" away and the straps were too short. Plus it was too big for the small frame bike. For $130+ you would expect a better engineered product.

I would have given this 5 stars as the bag performed well on a 7 day bikepacking trip, however it installation is such a pain to (a) understand how it is supposed to go and then (b) a pain to actually get it installed when you finally figure it out. The installation instructions (diagrams plus a video on youtube) are vague and move much too quickly to really understand what part is supposed to go where. Too bad since that would be an easy fix for Blackburn to do.Once installed, it was great. The bag is very easy to remove when you arrive at camp for the night and the parts seemed sturdy. The air vent was a great add and made packing compactly easy.I still would buy it again given the ease of use and quality materials, but the install sucks.
