This box is 8.66 " square. It held two young hamsters from the pet store to the house. It is made of plastic and the design is cute so it doesn't look boring amongst your pet supplies. The lid stays securely shut until you unlock the handles. It says made of faux leather plastic but there is no faux leather. The box is made of a light plastic material. I would not transport mice in this as they could chew through the plastic very fast. It is a good box to have on hand to take your hamster to the veterinarian. This is too short in height for a bird or anything larger than a couple of hamsters.
