BAND STORY

1

What Is Brake Light Switch?

Brake light switches are necessary only if you’re installing a supplemental braking system monitor, and the vehicle’s OEM brake light switch doesn’t work when the vehicle is in ‘tow’ mode.

The brake light switch is only activated when the brake pedal is depressed. No other manufacturer provides brake light switches with this level of specificity. If you know when the towed vehicle’s brake pedal is depressed and released, then you know if the supplemental braking system is positioned properly and working as it should.

2

Why You Need Change?

If you’ve ever wondered why your brake lights illuminate when you press the brake pedal, you can thank the small but important electrical part known as the brake light switch. This hidden piece plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of your vehicle and those around you by activating your brake lights and communicating to your vehicle when the pedal has been pressed.

A new brake light switch typically won’t break the bank, and for most vehicles, it will be less than $60. But when it fails, the consequences can be much more than just a repair bill. It can affect safety and other vehicle operations like cruise control.

3

When Should It Be Serviced?

If you have a bad brake light switch, symptoms can vary depending on your vehicle. However, two of the most prevalent and common are that the brake lights stay on all the time if the switch fails in the closed position, or the brake lights won’t illuminate at all when the pedal is pressed, indicating a failure in the open position.

These symptoms aren’t exhaustive, though. Other potential concerns can include:

  • The cruise control won’t set or it cancels unexpectedly
  • Brake lights flickering or activating intermittently
  • The shift interlock won’t disengage, and you can’t move the gearshift lever normally or it might be stuck in park
  • An ABS light illuminated

4

How It's Done?

The brake light switch is located near the brake pedal assembly, and its primary function is to activate your vehicle’s brake lights when you apply pressure to the brake pedal. This simple yet critical action serves two primary purposes.

  1. Visibility. When you press the brake pedal, the brake lights instantly illuminate at the rear of your vehicle. This alerts drivers behind you that you’re slowing down or coming to a stop, helping prevent rear-end collisions, especially in low-light conditions or inclement weather.
  2. Safety. Your brake lights also inform drivers and pedestrians of your intentions on the road, contributing to smoother traffic flow and reducing the risk of accidents.
