Phenylthiourea (PTC) and Control Test Paper Kit

For Genetic Taste Testing

This kit is all you need for a controlled demonstration of genetics and heredity. These strips can be used to help determine if a person is a ‘supertaster’ and can be used to effectively demonstrate the effects of heredity on taste. PTC (pheylthiocarbamide) can help you gain an understanding of someone’s genetic pedigree. The strip can taste anywhere from bland to incredibly bitter for individuals depending on their genotype and phenotype. The control test paper is used as a placebo.

  • Individuals who can detect PTC have the TAS2R38 gene, a bitter taste receptor.
  • Put one PTC on your tongue for 10 second and if you taste bitterness you have this characteristic homozygous dominant or heterozygous. Use the control paper to add validity to your experiment
  • Do you have supertaster traits? Find out with this simple and fun test!
  • Perfect for demonstrating genetic pedigrees and learning about genotypes and phenotypes
  • Includes 100 strips of BOTH PTC strips and control, perfect for controlled experiments

PTC Paper has been used widely since its discovery to detect genetic variation in tasting abilities. Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) is a chemical which causes a bitter flavor to some people. This is a genetic variation which normally occurs in a ratio of 75% who can taste PTC versus 25% of those who cannot. Research suggest it is related to an enzyme which is produced by cells on the tongue. Though not essential for survival, this condition might explain why some people are more sensitive to bitter tastes than others.

Instructions:

1.Remove a PTC taste test paper from the vial.

2.Stick out your tongue, and place the strip on your tongue.

3.There are three basic results: bland, bitter, or vile.

4. Use the control paper in the same way as the PTC, it should have no taste.

PTC Taste Test Paper is perfectly safe to use. Any possible toxicity of PTC would be in grams per kilogram of body weight, which is millions of times greater than anything which would be found in our taste test strips. Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) is present at only 20 micrograms per strip. At this level, the compound is negligible and harmless.

Product turned up quickly. It’s crazy how some people can taste it and others taste nothing. Fun experiment

The strips are not uniformly made, so the same person could test Taster or Not Taster depending on which strip they happened to receive, making it extremely unreliable, and therefore useless for science experiments.

If you are a Science teacher, these are great. Not only do you have the control group, but also the experimental testing strips to go along with the purchase. These are a blast, that is for those with the PTC gene, a taste shock. LOL! Let the Sciences LIVE ON!

Such a simple little thing ended up being so much fun. I bought to see if my dad was a picky eater or if he really was a super taster. After one test everyone wanted to try! There's 100 of each paper so there's plenty to share. Definitely worth the money for the quick fun.

L'ho acquistato per delle attività laboratoriali perché l'avevo già utilizzato all'università. Si può utilizzare senza difficoltà anche a casa.

My family and friends love to do taste tests. Using these strips we get an idea of who has stronger taste buds which has led to fun conversations about why we prefer certain tastes, why some people react strongly to tastes, etc. A fun and cheap little experience!
