To keep the wood dust when I sanded out of my lungs

I carve tobacco pipes using a rotary tool, so I'm working on 2" cubes of hard wood with a carbide burr tip or a flap wheel sanding tip for hours at a time. I had a small downdraft box connected to a shopvac that I had been using for dust collection, and this is a big upgrade from that. Much quieter, and a reasonably good dust collector. It is not, however, getting all the dust. I still need to wear a face mask. It's doing a better job than my downdraft was, though. The polycarbonate shields are both good and bad. They're good in that they vector the air right over your workpiece to provide maximum airflow where you are carving, and they also provide some modicum of chip protection (though I don't know if they can be counted on to replace your safety glasses). The bad, though, is that they really attract dust and so your view of the workpiece gradually diminishes until you clean them off. Also, I have found that my work light causes a pretty big glare on the polycarbonate that can make it hard to see what you are doing unless you fiddle with the light to get just the right angle.Speaking of lights, there are two big divots on the top of the case that the manual claims are for mounting worklights. I have no idea what kind of light would mount in these divots, and nothing on the manufacturer's website points to any particular light that fits, so they are a mystery to me.The filter is my main concern with the item. It's a very cheap and thin filter medium filter akin to the bargain filters you might buy for your furnace. I assume this is to allow for good airflow. It seems to do the job, but it was very easy to crush it during the install once the weather stripping you put around the filter opening in the case is installed to make a tight fit. It's also an odd size that I haven't found anywhere else, so be prepared to buy replacement filters from the manufacturer for a lot more than you'd pay for a furnace filter of similar construction.Overall, though, this is a good tool. Not perfect, but a big step up for me from what I had.

I bought this for my Father’s big sander that produces metal dust and yet it’s easy to pick up and move over to the band saw. It’s all metal construction and even though I’ve only used it a couple of times, it’s pretty darn good depending on how much dust and all you’re dealing with. This is to go in between places the big vac system doesn’t really get, like sweeping up small piles or something this helps a lot. So here are the pros, it’s fairly light weight, love the adjustable dial for the fan speeds, so it can be full force or barley on to adjust to the size you need… It’s not loud on full force, sounds like a window unit a/c really. It has a single filter that is very easy to take out and bump off the dust and put right back into the metal framed box and I did that a couple times just because I’m a excessive clean addict lol, but it’s not necessary. THE CONS.. it comes with 4 plastic doors that have velcro lined on them and then there is velcro lined around the box and you just stick the doors on there and then you can narrow down the dust into the box from whatever your using. Now, they don’t really open and close well but they do the trick and it’s just a cheap rigged up way to put a top, bottom and 2 side plastic doors to help the dust channel into it, but it’s not a problem really. So far that’s the only issue I’ve had is just the doors velcro on there but now we have a pot belly stove in the shop, and due to the age of it when you build a fire it smokes a good bit at first until it warms up and that smoke lingers in the shop. I turned this thing on and after a while it had filtered the smoke and this is a shop that is 70x30ft12ft or 1500sq open shop. it’s not heavy and it’s on the large size so you may have to make it fit on certain tables or put it on something like I did to filter on the band saw, but hey it beats my dad breathing that stuff at his age and not one drop of dust or anything came out the back side of the fans. I literally raked off saw dust at it, and it filtered it. So again for smaller tables or projects this was just right for us.

This works great for great with my Ram BP50 power carver. Not to loud. No louder than my power carver. With door shut it as loud as an air vent in the room next door. On top there are two holes on both sides to put an anglepoise lamp light in. No need to clamp it down. What dust that’s not sucked up lands in front on your work table. I put some non slip tabs on the bottom to keep it from sliding on a plastic fold up table. It prevents dust from landing around the room. The noisiest it gets is when it throttles up to speed.

I'm using this with my Dremel carving and wood designs. The suction is good, however a small amount of dust does fall on the table. It's very quiet and even has 2 additional 110 outlets for accessories, such as lamps. Overall this machine exceeds my expectations. Great value for the money. My shop is much cleaner. I wish I had bought is sooner.

Well, after one month only two of the three fans work. There is no one to contact about how to repair or replace. Apparently there is no way to return after 30 days. Pile of junk.

This is an excellent portable dust collector. Of those available commercially for woodcarvers, this is a moderately priced dust collector with many premium features. It has plenty of fan power to carry off any dust being created within about 12-18" of the collector's filter. I like the variable fan speed, the hot sockets for power carving equipment or lights, and the hole on top to insert an artist extension lamp. The filter can be easily cleaned with my shop vac after extended use to increase its longevity. Areas for improvement include the flimsiness of the lucite panels and its velcro attachment system and the very high fan noise during operation.
