Excellent for fast rough drilling in steel-laden wood. It is amazing how removing the forward-pointing barbs on these spade bits makes them slice through steel-laden wood like butter. Buy the short shank (6" or 8") one and drive it with a hex extension to save some $, but pay attention to the size of the hex end of the shank. The screw tip of the bit pulls it through the wood quickly, it takes a long time to wear out the flat cutting surface, and after a few holes there is no wear damage to the bit.
